Iri spite of the extremely unseasonable weather experienced recently, the recreation ground was in good order for the athletic sports held by the Druids on Labour Day, and there was a large attendance of the public. The comniittep and the secretary (Mr. C. H. Gardiner) are to bo commended for the admirable manner in which the sports were conducted. Mr. 15. J. King was starter, and Mr. J. Collinswood (the Athletic Associations official haiidicapper) was present. The following are the results of the various events:—l2o yards hurdle race: \\". Almdorf and A. Thompson, dead heat, 1; C. Mexted, 3. Flaxmill Employees' Handicap (100 yards): Frankland, 1; Sciascia, 2. Running Hop, Step, and Jump: liosenfeldt, 1; ~H. V. Pope, 2. 220 Yards Handicap: Almdorf, 1; Thompson, 2. 100 Yards Local Business Men's Knee: Graham, 1; Murray, 2. Young Ladies' Race: Lily Foster, l"; Ivy C'oker, 2. Pillow Fight: J. Ctirran, 1; P.' Blows, 2. Sack Eace (50 yards): Torter, 1. Tug-of-war (10 a-side): The Maori team beat the Druids and the /lax employees' teams. 410 Y'ards Handicap: It. Eeid, 1; J. M'Kain, 2. .Married Women's I?ace (75 yards): Mrs. Thomas, 1. Medley Race: J. Curran, \\ W. Healey, 2. High Jump: Mexted, sft. lin., 1. SBO Yards Handicap: Rosenfeldt, 1; Bayne, 2. Siamese Jiace (75 yards): E. Perry and J. Curran, 1. 150 Yards Forced Handicap: M'Kane, 1; Mexted, 2. During the afternoon Mr. James Curran and Miss M. Terry danced Highland flings. Pipers Burke and Eeaburn played selections on the bagpipes. The large modern three-story building in Cuba Street, at the corner of Swan Lane, belonging to the T. G. Macartliy Estate, and which has not been occupied sinco it was built, has been taken by George and George, drapers. Mr. J. M. Dawson, architect to the estate', has just completed plans for an addition at the back. This will be of two stories, and will make 85 feet of show window space to Swan Lane, and 42 feet to Cuba Street. The whole of tlio buildings will be occupied by the various retail departments except the top'floor, which will be reserved for workrooms. The building, when completed hy this latest addition, will havo cost over .£6OOO. Mr. Dawson has also had completed for the Macarthy Estate the Terminus Hotel, Picton, which is now held hv the Public Trustee as executor. The work cost .C 7500. Messrs. G. A. Smith nnd Co., Picton, were builders, and the architect's representative was Mr. "W. I?. Lepper, Wellington. A memorial recording the heroism of Wallaco Hartley, the bandmaster of the Titanic, nnd his fellow-musicians w as unveiled on Sunday, September 1, in St. Mark's ChureTi, Dewsbnry, where Mr. Hartley's family worship.
