NOTES AND COMMENTS,

IDr Glbncoe.J •There was not much fast work at Riccarton yesterday, and what there was did not impress the track watchers (telegraphs our correspondent). The plough gallop provided good going, and, nmongst those which satisfied their trainers, were Clio Welcome Stakes candidate, Jason (Achilles—Slepina), who ran clean away from Tatterley alter giving hint a start ■over four furlongs, run ill SOsec. Tho crack colt by this exhibition restored himself ill public favour. He is likely to start favourite in Hie big two-year-old event. Of tho Cup candidates, Vice-Admiral surprised everybody by defeating Allegory in a brush over the Inst half-mile of a two-circuits' task. Lady Lucy worked well over ton furlongs, ami is coming into favonr. Goldtinder carried about two stone more than his C'up weight, and badly beat Midnight Sun at the finish of o good mile. In addition to giving awav a lot of weight lie was on the outside. Prior to leaving tor Lyttelton 011 Tuesday, Mr. W. E. Bidwill was informed by telegraph that both Vocation and Imagination had contracted colds at Riccarton. Tho telegram also stated that one ot the stable apprentices li.id sustained a broken arm by Mug thrown from one ot 11. i'hompson's two-year-olds. So far no rider has been secured for Crown Pearl in the Stewards' Handicap, and it is reported that the owner is holdin? off in the hope of securing the services of A. Oliver, who it is thought will not bo able to get down to Ermengardc s weight, Bst. 21b. ' There were not sufficient boxes at Lyttelton yesterday to accommodate the fifty horses which were shipped south on the previous evening, and some of the animals did not reach Riccarton till nearly j p.in. ■Reports from the south state that the Xew Zealand Cnp candidate, Domino, was roughing yesterday, and it is thought tliahe contracted a chill on the voyage to 'T.vttclton. Judging by Golden Loop's, exhibition of jumping yesterday, the gelding is not improving in his fencing. Trainer Cameron mav Have to take the extreme course of giving him a preliminary over a couple of fences on Saturday, as he seems always to go better after a trial spin. The final payments for Jhe New Zenland Cup and Stewards Handicap must be considered entirety satisfactory. Uyron and Mira are the only horses which drop out of the Cnp, and 24 runners are left in the Stewards' Handicap. Blue Lako Culprit, and Peirene are tho most fancied in the short race, and the Greenwood bracket—Vice-Admiral and Allcgory-w likelv to be as formidable a proposition in tlie Clip as was Noctmform. Despite the shortness of Allegory s price, it is certain that Vice-Admiral will start. Dccley is to have his choice of mounts 011 the day, and the fact that, so far, no indication has been given as to which he will ride, makes the result appear open. Nominations for the FeUding Jockey Club's meeting close to-mororw. In connection with tho Marlborough Racing Club's spring meeting, owners are reminded that nomination* for all events close on Saturday. The programme is well worthy of perusal. Acceptance? for the first dav s events at the Auckland Racing Clubs spring meeting close to-morrow. Craganoui', who is considered the best two-year-old in England this yeai', and who has been retired from the remainder of this season's engagements with a view to being put by for next year's Derby, is by Desmond, whose dam, t was a mare named I/Abbessc do Joiiarre. An amusing" story is told regarding the - latter. Starting a short-priced favourite for a race at a provincial meeting, tho bookmakers made heroic attempts to pronounce her French ndme, but most of them, failed badly. At length one more imaginative than the others gave'it up, and with a good cockney accent shouted: "Five to 2 Abscess on the Jaw!
