EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING.

Tho monthly meeting of tho Wellington Education Board was held yesterday, there- being present: The chairman (Mr. Robert Lee), ami Messrs. J. Kobbell, W. Freeman, J. G. W. Aitkcn, A. W. Hogg, Wm. Allan, and W. 31. I'ield. According to the statement of finances, tho balance amounted to ,£2570 Bs. 5d., on tho debit: sride; at the previous meeting the debit balanco was JU1332 7s. 2d. Referring to tho debit balance, the chairman explained that the outgoings for tho month had been particularly heavy, and included the quarterly payments to School Committees, approximating .£IOOO. The resignations of the followimf teachers wore received:—Miss A. D. Bright, Mikimiki; Miss N. Johnston, Korokoro North; Mrs. 15. Murray, Clyde Quay; and Mr. E. A. King, Kaiwaiwai.

GRANTS FOR SCHOOLS. School grants for the following purposes were authorised:—Taita, concrete floors, rehanging windows, etc.; Kaitara, windows, papering fireplace, etc.; Kaiwniwai, fencing, and pump; To Aro, sump and drainage, Main School; Normandalo, foncinf? repairs; Tokonmru, shifting basins; Cross Creek, tfrant for further improvements in consideration of mod work dono by committee; Brooklyn, subsidy on improvements and half cost of dividing fence; South . Wellington, subsidy, asphalting, etc.; Mangaonc, tojiks and stands, residence and school; Clareville, water meter and repairs: Raton, subsidv, concrete fencn; Korora, half cost ground improvements; Shannon, repairs; Kilbiriiio. tank rubbish destructor; PiiKotoi, brealnvind and shifting door; ParUvalo pump; Pirinoa, water service, stand pipes, and tap; Mnramii, subsidy, half cast of fencing and hose; Ivhandallah, subsidy; Johnsonville, expenditure on Newlands site. . Library subsidies were authorised ns Featiierston South, 10s.; Maranui, .£2 10=.; Featherston, 11s. 3d.; Kaiwarra, £3. SCHOOL SITES. . . Ii; was resolved with regard to the following sites:—That tenders be invited for lease for "\ years of Section 18, Block XV, Jfnkuri, and Section 27, Block IX, Mangahao. Pahiatiia (hedge encroaching on street).—That tho attention of the headmaster bo directed to the matter. Section IG, Block V, Puketoi.-That the lesseo be requested to make immediate payment of arrears. An offer for nart of tho school sito at Hutt, and an offer for the lease of the sito at Brooklyn, were declined. ITataito.t (site)-Decision deferred pending visit. South Wellington.— That members visit tho new site; that a sum not exceeding .£lO be authorised for an estimate of improving Town Acre 10G5, and that tho directors of the Ifornington Estate be informed of tho position regarding South Wellington. VARIOUS MATTERS. The board also resolved, with regard to tho following:— - . Hamua (residence site)— Mr. Bedingfield granted a three years' extension of leaso to December 31, 1918, provided he puts tho building into, and maintains it in, order to tho satisfaction of the board. Matahiwi.—Contractor allowed full time to complete the new school building. Mauricpvillo West—Consideration of offer of residence deferred pending receipt of further information. Waterfalls.—Matter of defective chimney left in the hands of tho foreman (o remedy. Horokiivi—Offer for tank (,C1) bo accepted. Wainui-o-mata.—Tender for removal of old reridenco accepted. Jlanakau.—Refund made to head teacher on account of lodging [£b 15.5.). Kaiwaiwai—Refund to teachers on account of books destroyed by fire. Payment to bo made, at the rate of half cost of those bonks actually used in tho instruction of tho pupils. Wadestown.— Tenders to > bo invited for clearing noxious weeds from unoccupied site, provided similar action is taken by adjoining owners and by the corporation. Newlands.—Offer by Jfr. Chapman of site and buildings now occupied for school declined. Kaiwarra.—Letter of the head teacher regarding increasing difficulties of work at the school referred to tho chairman and chief inspector for report.
