HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

An ordinary meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening, and was attended by the Mayor and Councillors Hobbs, Ball, lioots, Uendou, Hawthorn, Hodgins, Knight, and Kemptliorno.' It was decided to present Fireman Devereux with a five years' service medal.

Tho Kaihvay Department wrote, pointing out that, in gazetting tho new Hutt lioad, it would bo necessary.' to determine under which local authority tho control of the road is to bo placed, Tho communication suggested that a conferenco be held.-Held over.

The Wellington Kugby Union forwarded a cheque for .£2O on ground rout, and 13s, as one-third of gate receipts. The Department of Lands and Survey complained that when tho drain was being laid in Victoria Street three of the standard survey blocks were removed. . Tho Department, notified that the blocks had since been replaced,, nnd the amount, .£3 18s., charged to the council.—.Referred to the engineer to inquire'into. Clenuon Bros, made application for the erection of a retainiiig-wall in Bridge Street, they having decided to erect an iron fence on the frontage of their property.—Held over for report.

Mr. F. W. Couchman applied for permission to Jill i)i an old stonn-water drain between liis section and a section in Kpuni Street.—Granted, subject to the satisfaction of the engineer. 'I'lie rinance Committee repjrtod.—That the clerk had been instructed to write to the Pctone Borough Council in referonce to the poor pressure ci' gas, and to point out that, if they did not consider the purchasing of a new gasometer, in accordance with the agreement between-both parties,, the ilutt Council would.have to consider its position. The half-yearly financial report had t Keen-considered, and the committee were of opinion that the report was very satisfactory. The report recommended that the usual final rate demands should bo issued, and authority given, to sue tor unpaid rates. The committee further recommend that a sum of .£25 19s. 9d., representing old gas ac? counts, should he written oil, nnd. also an account for Ji2 for the hire of a pump.— The report was adopted. \ , , The engineer reported that repairs authorised in Waterloo Koad and Pretoria Street .'had been carried oat a>; far as possible. Twenty-six chains of fencing had b-ien done ou Walmii Hill, the cost being ,£24 16s. 9d. ' The report suggested -that a three-inch gas main should bo carried from Main Road to Pretoria Street, and threa lamps erected. The cost would bo about .C24-J. Permits to the number of 659 had been issued under tho drainago and sanitary by-law. Three connections had been made with the gas mains,, and II with, the water mains during the month.—The report was adopted.
