MAUNGANUI'S- AHRIVAL. ■According to a, wirclese measage, the Jlaunganui expects to arrive in port from Sydney at 6 a.m. to-day. Upon arrival, tho vessel will berth at the Queen's Whan No. 4. The local oflico of the Union Company have been advised that she has on board 235 ealoon and 228 steerage passengers, the latter including eight Chinese.
SUEREY FEOM LIVERPOOL. The F. and 8. Line's steamer Surrey arrived at Wellington, from Liverpool, via. way ports yesterday, and berthed at the Taranaki Street Wharf.
The second officer reports that the Surrey left Liverpool on August.24, and arrived at Jladciri on August 50, where she coaled, and continued her voyage- the same day. Cape Town was reached on ■ September 18, where the vessel again coaled, and left again the following day. On September 20 a. heavy south-west gale was encountered, which continued for three days. Another heavy gale was met with on September 25, which raged for two days. Prom then onwarde line weather prevailed until avrival at Ilobart on October 11, the voyage being resumed at 6 p.m. the following day. On the run from the Tasmanian port to Auckland, fine weather wae Coming down the coast the Surrey met last Saturday's gale when she had rounded East Cape, and this was responsible for her late arrival in port.

She will then loud at tho Bluff, Timaru, Lyttelton, and Wellington for West, Coast of England ports, and is to sail finally from Wellington for Avonmouth, via Las Palmas, on November 29.
COBINTHIC REPORTED. Cable advice received by the local agents for tho Shaw, Sarill, and Albion Company intimated that R.M.S. Corinthic, which left Wellington for London on October 4, continued her journey from Monte Video on October 24. She is duo at her destination on November 15. ZEALANDIO LEAVES TEE OAPE. Advices to hand state that tho ShawSavill etcamer Zealandic left Cape Town on October 25. The vessel is en route from London to Wellington, and is due at this port about November 27. THE UAWERA. On inquiry at tho local offico of the South Taranaki Steamship Company yesterday, it was ascertained that about 3D tons of cargo had been saved from the wrecked steamer Hawera a.t Pa-tea, ICo further word had been received concerning the vessel's position. i MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. The death is reported of Mr. James Murray, late third officer of the Oanopus. Deceased had been ill for some time, one died at AVhangarei a few days ago—"Otago Daily Times." Mr. S. Chatneld, second officer of the Rosamond, and Mr. Owen, second of the Jlaupiri, have exchanged petitions. Mr. T. Gray, second engineer of the ITimitongi, came ashore at Wellington yestorday on account of ill-health. The steamer Birkenfcls, running under charter to the U.S. and A. Line from New Tori; to Wellington, left Sydney for Audilaud last Saturday. She is due hero about November 7.-

Hector Observatory, Wcllington.-The position of the Ileotor Observatory is as follows:— Latitude, 41deg. 17min. 3.765ec. South. Longitude. 11 hours 39min. 4.27eec. East of Greenwich. Height, above 1909 mean sea level. 418 feet. Chronometer Rating Notice.—At 1 p.m. to-day a galvanometer signal for rating chronometers will be pent from the Observatory to the Public Telegraph Office and to the Dominion Museum. The needle will move at 1 p.m. exactly of New Zealand standard mean time, when a. chronometer set to Greenwich mean timo should show 15 hours Minin. Any difference will be tho eiTor of the chronometer on Greenwich mean time. At 9 p.m. correct time will also be sisnailed from the Observatory by means of electric lights. A green light will be switched on at about 8.45 p.m.. a red one at about 8.55 p.m., and a white ono at about 8.59 p.m., and all lights will be switched off at 9 p.m. exactly of New Zealand standard mean time. The preparatory, switching on of tho lights must be considered as only approximately correct, and must not bo used for rating chronometers.
