SPORTS AT PETONE.
' Never before in the liistory of tho Hutt Valley have such a large crowd assembled at a sports gathering as was present at the Potent, Recreation Ground yesterday to witness the initial Labour Day sports, organised by a strong local committee. There were fully 3000 people present in the afternoon. The procession was a distinct feature, the turn-outs and costumes in many cases being very original. Tho following are the winners in tho various events:— Racing Events. Married Ladies' Knee— Mrs. Jonoa, 1: .Mrs. Harl, 2. Girls' Knee,—Miss Southgate, 1; Miss Simpson, 2. Ladies' llace.—Miss Webster, 1; Miss Lee, 2. Married Ladies' Consolation. Race.—Mrs. XJsmar, 1; Mrs. Cnrlton, 2. Pillow Fight—Mr. Hodson, 1. Labour Day Handicap, 100yds.—Ryan, 1; Tresseder, 2; Daley, 3. 220yds.—Lowry, I; Ryan, 2; Daley, ;). «ovds.-Ryan, 1; Lowry, 2; Trossoder, 3. Ityan won the aggregate with eight poiats, Lowry being second with five points, and Tresseder with three mints was third. Married lien's Race.—H. Midgway, I) H. Wright, 2. Ladies' Pig Hunt.—Mrs. Grant and Mrs. Olsen, a tie. Men's Pig Hunt.—E. Ryan. Men's Race, over 50 years.—E. Gougb, 1| 11. Nunn, 2. Boys' Half-mile Walk.— Nicholls, 1; Thomas, 2. Wheelbarrow Race. —Mrs. May and Mr. House, 1; Mr. and Mrs. Oate, 2. Three-legged Rice.—Norris and Lowry, 1; Corson and Moonoy, 2. Gymkhana.—Miss Webster nad Mr. Bold; Mrs. May and Mr. House. Tho Tug-of-ivar was won by the Gear Company's team. Fire Brigades' Eventa for Licensed Victuallers' Shield. Five Mea Heel.—Gear Company, 51 l-ssec, 1; Pctone Workshops, 52 2-sseo., 2; Hutt, 58 3-ssec., 3. Five-Men Flat Event.—Gear Company, 3B 4-5 sec., 1; Hutt, 41 l-ssec., 2j Petono Workshops, 11 1-Ssec, 8. Tho three-men flat was not competed for owing to tljo Gear Company winning the shield on the first two events, with 12 points. Workshops wore runnerslip with 6 points. Other Brigade Events.
