--? PRESENT METHODS CONDEMNED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, October 21. Before tho Empiro Trade Commission, Mr. James Powell, chairman of the leather section of the Chamber of Commerce, condemned the present wasteful manner of branding Australian hides, which were badly flayed. He estimated that Australia thus lost nearly ,£1,500,000 annually, compared with Argentina, where small .brands were used and tho flaying was carried out inoro carefully. Ho condemned tho use of glucose, which gavo Australian hides a bad reputation. Leather was still being'sent to England as hides in a form that English tanners had abandoned forty years ago,
