CURIOUS CONDUCT.
The conduct of the member for Wairau in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon will require a lot of explaining away amongst those who are lovers of political lair play. Apparently some person outsido the Houso wrote a letter .containing gross reflections on a member on the opposite side in politics to the member for Wairau. For some inexplicable reason tho member for Wairau sought by every means within his power to nave this letter, containing, as ho himself informed the House, these gross reflections, made public in Parliament, and thus secure for them permanent record in tho reports of the, proceedings of Parliament. Mn. M'Calmjm declared himself to be actuated by the highest motives—it was his duty to the Parliament, he asserted, to place on record this letter slandering a fellow member. Certainly some members have a very curious idea of what constitutes their duty—a very unpleasant idea it will probably seem to most people. The member for Wairau has not so far distinguished himself in Parliament, and possibly never will, but he might at least endeavour to remain on reasonably good terms with his fellow members. 'If he hopes to do this, however, he had bettor avoid such tactics as aroused the resentment of the_ House yesterday afternoon, and which led to him receiving a snub which, severe as it was, was richly merited.
