" OUT AT TRENTHAM. •

THE EFFORTS ON THE TRACK.

[Bt Glf.ncoe.]

Trenthnro. was early nslir yesterday morning, and activity was noticeablo in nil quarters. The weather was fine, but the t'oiug was on tho heavy sido for the final "try outs." The sand and outside of the course proper were open, and trainers fully availed theniselvesvof the latter track. In the majority of'cases nothing more.than half a mile was fried. C. Pritchnrd opened tjlie work by sending Blue Lake (M'Donald) alons over foun furlongs, which the. MerriwC3 mare covered in 51 l-Ssec, moving really well. Other members of the same team which worked were Prosper, five furlongs. The last four werei covered in 52 2-s=oc, Biddy joining him. Ceylon did a sound circuit, and was allowed to run along down the straight. Odessa covered five furlongs in linin. Gsec., and Merrivale and Valtiri a sound half mile.

J. H. Prosser began with St. Felix (Emerson) and Hawick (Dceloy), who covered a milo in lmin. DGsec. Tho former finished well in front,' his companion, being unable to make any show at all in. the soft going. Hoopoe and Dithyramb finished together at tho end of .three furlongs, ii couple of lengths ..behind the Charlemagne II filly,,,wJiq: Jiad';.a light weight.

Dearest did a round' at half pace, and was allowed to finish down the straight. "Gipsy Belh did half-pace work.

Styx and Aratiatia finished together over half a mile, run in 52sec., Dirge and Parky taking a second longer, and Stepney with Aloha was responsible for a similar gallop.

S. Waddell arrived overnight with ten horses, all of whom were restricted to cantering. < His team consists of Glade, Missile, Gladful, Sir Tristram, Bollin, Idealise, Lyrique, <Peary, Bootle, and Snslcayne. The last-named looks really, well, and is fancied for. the big handicap to-morrow.

J. W. Lowe sent Obligant (Berry) over seven' furlongs, which took lmin. 36sec. The little toy colt pleased greatly by the way in which he finished. Mira had Ngatiinaru well beaten over the same distance, and also pleased greatly.

Secret Link had Guiding Way' and Garance well beaten over a three-furlongs gallop, but the last-named was carrying Oliver, and had all tho worst of the weights.

G. Price worked Adelicia and Gerberga together over half a mile, and Ermengartlo was sent out with Lady Moutoa and Makara. Tho latter trio went six furlongs, and the .two first-named finished well in front in linin. 20sec. Lockwood was sprinted, as was Mallard, and Bronze went a mile and a quarter well.

J. Ayei'3 sent Bracken a strong round, Lady Kilcheran and Merrivonia separately a milo at three-quarter pace, Semaphore cantered, and Beacon did strong work, and Simla sprinted.

J. Cress gave Atakura and Elevated a working gallop over five furlongs. F. Tilley sent Equitas (Weller), with about Bst. 21b. in the saddle, six furlongs in liniii. ISisee. The Advance mare went in her usual brilliint style, and is likely to start favourite in the Wellington Handicap, in which shewill be ridden by A. Oliver. Sanguinary ran five furlongs in lmin'. Tsac. Slio finished badly, probably on account of.her rider letting her go too fast over the first half-mile.

J. Scott sent Naumai half a milo alone, the journey occupying oljsoc. Mount Victoria took ljseo. longer over the same course, but did it easily. Aema was given strong work. .

W. C. Ring gave Domino (J. O'Shea) a solid gallop*over 1} miles, which tho bay horen covered in 2min. 2-lsec. This was a taking gallop, considering that the horse was not having the benefit of company, and is a lazy worker. Potoa ivas given a solid mile alone.

T. F. Quinlirtiu sprinted Red Book on Iho inside, Jason in the centre, and Tntterley over three furlongs. Tho firstnamed finished in front of Jnson, with Tatterlcy wide out on the bend—a length away. Midnight Sun worked with Bronze and Byron, over lj inil'.'s, and acquitted himself well, and Theodore ran half n milo in 52 l-ssec. Ventura took a second longer to cover the same journey.

F. Iliggott sent Undecided li miles at half-pace. He was ridden by \V. Young, who seemed to hold him at auy pace (hat he desired. Merry Ih-ank walloped half a niilo 'in i>i l-ssec. Court/ey took 52 seconds over the same distance. Alecto was given a fast half-inife, and liiown Trout, with Ladrone as a companion, covered six furlongs in lmin. 'ilsec. Tlie two-year-olds Peronella and I'rinco Laddo sained many admirers by sprinting three fiirlonßS in llOsee. 'J'he former is tho full-sister to J'eroneal, nnd can cnllop fast, while, for sucli a bife' coll, Prince Laddo h also good. , F. Davis worked his l.wo-yenr-olds steadily, and, in a sprint down the straight, The llajjue (F. J). .Tones) pleased better than Saltano nnd Lanilrail, l.oth lightweights, liobrikolf worked at half-pace, nnd though a little sore he walked away well. He is a doubtful stai-ler on Salurday, and, unless flic course dries up considerably, he will not. bf raced on Monday. Others out and doiii" useful work were: Daunlon, Clreyslonc. filwell (who jumped), Silver King, drown I'enrl, Merry Guy. Sea. Queen (who wtirkcd durini; Ihe breakl'iiM; interval, and ran seven furlongs in lmin. 27M?e.), Lady Volga, and Ilniuuraina.

Those racegoers, who in the past have grumbled because of the fact that lliero was nft irain to Trentham between It a.m. and I p.m., will find that they have no cause to do so to-morrow, as the racing- club has arranged for a special train to leavo the city at mid-day.

Considering the long and tiresome train journey that the Bushy Pnrk yearlings had to' undergo on Wcdmwiay in coming from Kai hvi to Wellington, tlin wholo nine of them looked wonderfully well yesterday when being shipped south by the Lyttelton steamer. •

The double dciul-hcnt at Alexandra Park on September 14 'recalls the pveu more exciting'case at Sandown Park at the Second Summer Meeting in IS3S, when a double dead-heat was followed by a decider. The race was the Snrbiton Handicap, and tho horses concerned were Mr. C. J. Merry's five-year-old Deuce of Clubs and General Owen Williams's five-year-old Sea Sone. • The winner was ridden by Licldiard ,nnd Sea Song by S. Loafes". Tour years earlier there was a double dead-heat at the Nottingham Autumn Meeting, when Candhhar 11. and Scotch Pearl had to go to the post twice for the Friar Tuck Selling Plale. but after the second dead-heat tho stakes, ns at Alexandra Park, were divided. G. Barrett rode Candahar II and F. Archer Scotch Pearl.—London "Sportsman."

The Mnrlborongh Racing Club's Sprin, meeting is to be held on November 20 and 21, dates which should appeal particularly to North Island owners, and especially to those making the journey to the' Christchurch meeting, as the trip to Blenheim can l>3 taken on their way home. The stakes for the Marlborough meeting have been somewhat increased, and' "'as the course has been top-dressed and is in perfect order, the meeting should receiyo good patronage from this sido. Nominations close on Saturday, November 2.

A 'well-known .Southland sportsman passed away on Saturday evening in tho person of Mr. R. Blackham. The deceased gentleman was well known as an allround sportsman, but, if he had a leaning to any particular outdoor pastime it was without doubt to coursing. Mr. Blackham was at one time a successful owner of racehorses, both on" account and .in conjunction with Mr. T, Surman. The horsre were trained by Messrs. 11. Gault and M. Evans, and the latter rodo most of them in their -winning essays, while (ho lightly-weight«l>porformers generally carried T. Uuddicombs, o jockey who subsequently mails a great name lor himself in j\Vw Zealand. Tlie veteran was one of tho first Southland owners to win races uway from home, and this was accomplished at Forbnry (Dunedin), Oumaru, and elsewhere with Puck ami Gaiety. Among other winners from Hie same stable lvcre Solitude, Success; Shifnal, and Streamlet, all bred in the vicinity of Invorcargill, the last-named of whom was from the same family as Surefoot and Lody Lorraine, to say nothing of the letter's sons, Warsaw and- Cocoon. Latterly the'deneased sportsman confined his turf operations' to keenly following the careers of other people's horses, and he was seldom absent from local racing reunions. In his day, Mr. Blnckham was A noted pigeon shot, and latterly art enthusiastic breeder and racer of homing pigeons, being one of the original members of both the Southland Gun. Club and the Inyereargill Homing Society.—"So'uthland 'rimes." FIXTURES. Oct. 25—Poverty Bay T.C. Spring. Oct. 2G and 28.—"Wellington K.C. Spring. Oct.. 28. — Wave'rloy-Waitotara R.C. Annual.
