« — : MR. J. GOTJLD, CIIMSTCHOTCH. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.)' ■ Chrlstchurch, October 24. ' This morning a private cable message was received by Messrs. Gould, Beaumont, end C.i., convoying intelligence- oi the sudden death in London of Sir. Joseph GouM, well-known in business circles in Christchurcli. Death occurred at Mr. Gould'a ].ondon residence, Cadogun Place, on October 22, from heart trouble, and the news of his sid'len demise came as a shock to his many friends in Christclmrch. "■
The'late Mr. Joseph Gould was the eldest son of Mr. Gwrgo Gould, who came to Christchurch from Auckland in 1851. Ho received his education at Christ's College. In order to acquire business training and experience, ho entered theeffico of un impi.'tant firm of colonial*, merchants in London, and on rctnrninj, to New Ze.il.ind becamo secretary of the New Zealand .Shipping Company, which had then only recently been formed, in the year 1878 he left the service of the, Shipping Company, and with Mr. John Lewis, founded tho firm o£ Lewis and Gould. Mr. Lewis retired some time later, and Mr, John Beaumont joined the firm, which then acquired tho name which it has. since retained, viz., Gould, Beaumont', and Co. Ho was married to an Edin-. burgh ladv, and in 11)01 he fevered his con., nection with.tho firm, and left the Doniin-j ion to hko up permanent rreidenco in; England. Ho still took an interest in Now Zealand, however, and visited tho Dominion several times since. Ho was closely identified with a number of more; important commercial enterprises in the, city and Dominion. Ho was a director of the New Zealand Shipping Company, ond: held office both on tho local board and tho London Board. Ho was also a director of' tho Chriitehtirch "Press" Company,, Clu'istcluirch Gas Company, and the Permanent Investment and Loan Society, his business ability contributing in no small measure to tho success of those in. stitutions. He also took keen interest in matters affecting the agricultural wad pastoral welfaro of .the province, and held ; office as president, of the Canterbury -V.' ; nnd P. Society. His principal recreation was game shooting, and at Home he inI dulgcd freely his tastes in this direction, regularly leasing some well-known Scottish moors for the purpose. He was the principal owner of the Sherwood Downs Estate", South Canterbury, wli-ch was acquired bjv the Government last year for closer settlement.
