MOKAU CLAIMS. ' The House met nt 2.30 p.m. The Joshua Jones Claims Committee ,was granted seven days' extra time in Which to report to the House. LEAVE OF ABSENCE. Tour days' leave of absenco was granted to Mr. C. Parata (Southern Maori), on the ground of ill-hoalth. PUBLIC SERVICE BILL, The Hon. A. L. Herdman (AttorncvGeneral) moved that the amendments made by the Legislative Council in tho i Public bervice Bill be agreed to. Ho ; explained tho effect of the amendments; The principle of the Bill, rather than the amendments, was debated at considerable length by Opposition members. Mr. H. G. ELL (Christchurch South) moved as an amendment that certain of the alterations in the Bill made by the ! Legislative Council bo disagreed with. Tho amendments which ho wished to oppose ■ had to do mainly with restrictions as to political influence in the matter of appointments and promotions in the Civil . Service. ' ■ The amendments were agreed to after the House resumed at 7.30 p.m. A DIVORCE BILL. Tho Divorce and Matrimonial Causes Amendment Bill (the Hon. A. L. Herd- : taan) whs read a third time.
