WANGANUI JOTTINGS.

PREPARATION FOR CANADIAN CADETS. (Br 'felCEraoh.— Hrccia! Corrcsoondent.) Wanganui, October 23. Arrangements have been made to give the Canadian cadets a good time during their visit to 'Wanganui. A committee of citizens is taking Ihe matter up, and, agisted by financial aid from the borough Council, Agricultural and private citizens, have been able to lay out a good programme of entertainment, while the Biver Steamer Proprietary has undertaken to give the boys a free trip up the I river. The Education Department never stems able lo cope with the difficulties of overcrowding and under-stalling in schools in and around. Wanganui—two evils which tho suburban schools (owing to their •steady growth) continually sutler from. The latest complaint conies from the Gonvillo School, which, with an. accommodation for 1:20 children,- has to cram over 300 within its walls. The opening oi the last section of the Uoiirillo-CasUceliti'.' tramways—permitting through traffic to the,sea beach—has had a decided effect upon . the Tramways Board's revenue, which hitherto has always been a little short of the amount ncedecl to cover working expenses. Tho five days which have elapsed since tho through traffic started .show a profit to the board of ,£lB over'working expenses. ~Not,long„sinco the Wanganui Borough Council wrote'to the Public Health Department re the ensuring of a pure milk supply by tests for tuberculosis, and. rc-_ ceived a reply that the local inspector of the Department would take samples of milk for the purpose. When the Department's letter was read ,at last night's meeting of the council, Councillor Liffiton, who had moved in tho matter in tho first instance, expressed dissatisfaction in that his object was to ensure tests—not of the milk, but of tho cows themselves. He declared emphatically that there was too much apathy about disease in dairy herds, and said that, at. tho present.moment, there was.a cancerous cow running iu a dairy herd near Waitotiira, and, for all he knew, she might be in milk. Except for one councillor, who supported Councillor Lifiiton, the other members of the council treated the matter in a jocular spirit, and tho, subject dropped without anything.'beinf done in tho direction which Councillor Lifiiton desired.
