WAIRARAPA SHOW.
f . THE THIRTY-FIFTH. FIBST- DAY'S -PROCEEDINGS. (By Telegraph.—Special' Reporter.) Carterton, October 23. To-day the thirty-fifth annual show of the Wairarapa and East Coast Pastoral aud Agricultural Society was opened here! . The weather is very unfavourable, heavy raiu having fallen during the' greater, part of the day. For quite a number of years the society has had the misfortune to encounter bad weather for its show, and this year the rain and the annual gathering did not fail to arrive simultaneously. Only a few horses, the thoroughbreds— and the entries in the thoroughbred, classes are never large—were judged to(fay. The majority of the horses will be judged to-morrow. The draught horse competitions will be more interesting than usual on account of all draught stallions over two years.being required to pass a test. of soundness. Captain Young and. ilr. Clayton,' tiro well-known veterinary I surgeons from the Department of Agriculture,, will conduct the examinations. , . Most of the cattle were judged to-day,' and .the, contests, generally sneaking, have been', exceptionally keen, llawke's Bay-breeders carried off both the Shorthorn championships, Archibald At' Loan the premiership bull, and W. X. Williams the. cow honours. Many of the chief Shorthorn breeders of the island were in the competition. As is usual at Carterton, there was. a very' fine lot of Holstcins on show. The breed is' popular in fcho Wairarapa, and the Carterton show is. a-recognised, Mecca for Jlolstriu men. 31r...W. 1. Lovelock, of Longburn, annexed both tho' championships. The Ayrshire and the Jersey divisions wore strong, and a nice lot of milkers were sho\vn. ;.-..
