The Shaw-Savill liner Tainui, hound from London to New Zealand, has arrived here from Capetown, and will sail at noon on Thursday for Wellington. The Maitai, which left Sydney at 8 p.m. last Saturday, arrived at Wellington at 5.50 p.m. yesterday, and berthed at the Queen's Wharf No. 6. The vessel experienced north-easterly to southerly moderate to strong .winds,' with rain sciualls, until arrival at Farewell Spit at 7 a.m. yesterday, thence' south-easterly winds with heavy rain sciualls until arrival. ■ Tho Maitai had 1300 tons of genera! cargo on board, including 630 tons for Wellington. It is understood that the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company, and the New Zealand Shipping Company have decided to raise the third-class passenger rates between New Zealand and London and vice versa by £2 for single fares and £3 return. The rate to Monte Video and Rio do Janeiro is raised by £1. The new tariff comes into operation immediately. The Victoria, now -at Sydney, will not leave that port until to-day—one day late—and her departure from Auckland for southern ports has, therefore, been deferred until Wednesday, October 30. She will leave Wellington on the Saturday. In consDnucnce of the delay, the vessel will probably land her Lyttcllon cargo on the return from Dunedin, This point has not yet been decided. The Wimmera, leaving- Wellington to-day for Sydney, via Auckland, will arrive at the northern port as usual, but her departure for Sydney will be postponed from Mondoy until Tuesday afternoon. Owing to this delay, it is likely that the vessel will he a day late .in leaving Sydney on her next trip. Probably she will be docked there for cleaning and overhaul. On account of Monday next being Labour Day, the Northern Company's steamer Rarowa will leave Onehunga for New Plymouth on Tuesday, October 29, at 3 p.m. She will leave New Plymouth on the return trip on arrival of the mail train from Wellington on Wednesday, October 30.
