(By TeleEraph.-l'ress Association.! Chrlstohuroh, October 22. Whilst battling against a stormy southerly gale early this morning,, the ferry steamer Maori cast a blade from her starboard propeller, and consequently it was found necessary to place her in dock, shortly after noon to-day. The mishap occurred about-thirty miles couth of Kaikoura, and, notwithstanding that the propelling power was practically confined to the other two screws, the vessel made a good passage, arriving in port only half an hour behind her usual schedule time. Owing to the unsuitableness of the tide, the vessel cannot be allowed out of dock until a late hour this evening. Her departure for Wellington will not, therefore, take place until the arrival of the 10.20 p.m. train from Christohurch. MAITAI ARRIVES AT 4 P.M.A wircle63 message has been received from the steamer Mnitai, which is en route from Sydney to Wellington, stating that she was expected to make port at 4 p.m. to-day. The Jlaitai berths at the Queen's Wharf, No. 1 north, on arrival.
WARRIMOO'S OVERHAUL. The Union steamer Warrimoo will resume miming in the Sydney-Cook StraitMelbourne service, from Diincdin, on Sunday next. The vessel has been laid up at Port Chalmers for some wteKs, and lias undergone a very extensive overhaul, eosU ing some thousands of pounds, and repairs aud renovations have made her practically a "new ship." On arrival at Dunedin this trip the linital withdraws from the service for survey and overhaul.
KUMAKA LEAVES MONTREAL. Under the 'auspicce of the New Zealand Shipping Company the Shaw-Savill steamer Kuniara left Montreal for Wellington, via Cape Town, Australian ports, and Auckland, on October 21. The Union Company's sieamor Rakanoa, has been fixed to load timber at Greymouth for Melbourne aud Sydney.
The latest addition to the Tyser fleet, and incidentally the first of the Line equipped for the immigrant traffic, has completed her first round voyage. She arrived at Liverpool on October 10, and considering she went Home, via the Cape, made a very creditable passage, only 42 days having elapsed from date of departure from Albany.
Latest charters include the barque Eos, 996 tons, she is to load timber at Hokianga for Melbourne. The scow Maroro, 200 tons, takes a cargo of coal from Newcastle to W r anganui, thence timber from Havclock to Sydney.
The coastal steamer Storm is expected to load at Wellington for Picton and Wanganul on Saturday.
Tho Kairaki, which is due in port from Lyttelton to-morrow, loads here for the West Coast.
The Defender will proceed from Karamea to Lyttelton on her next trip. A call will be made at Wellington next week on l'tr way back to the West Coast.
The ketch Lizzio Taylor, laden with 1055 sacks of produce, arrived at Wellington from Timaru, yesterday morning. The caller left the southern port on Friday afternoon, and, after being becalmed all night, was taken up tho coast by a light southerly wind. From Saturday evening light northerly winds prevailed. The "Lizzie" proceeds to Havolock from Wellington, thence to Timaru, and, back to Wellington. "On Saturday, September 7, the cruiser Challenger arrived at Plymouth from the Australian station. She is to bo paid off' at Dcvouport and rccommissioned with a reduced nuclous crew for service in tin Eleventh Cruiser Squadron, Third Fleet. The necdlo will move at 1 p.m. exactly of New Zealand standard mean time, when a chronomotor set to Greenwich mean time should show 13 hours 30inin. Any difference will bo the error of tho chrouomotcr on Greenwich mean time.
At 9 p.m. correct time will also bo signalled from the Observatory by means of electric lights. A green light will bo switched on at about 8.45 p.m., a red one at about 8.55 p.m., and a white ono at about 8.59 p.m., and all lights will be switched off at 9 p.m. exactly of Now Zealand standard mean time. The preparatory switching on of the lights must bo considered as only approximately correct, and must not be used for rating chronometers. Tho correct time for rating will be given by switching off the lights simultaneously at 9 p.m.
