THE STATES LATEST HOLSTEINS.
MILK RECORD PEDIGKEES. Exporting to the Agricultural Department on ■ the Holstein bull ■ and four heifers which ho purchased for the Government on his recent visit to Canada, Mr.. W. M. Singleton, Assistant Dairy Commissioner, says:— "The individuals selected • for the... De-. partment aro undoubtedly among the best in North America, and have come from ancestry which' has proved, capable of producing quantities ol milk and butter-fat equalled by' few cows of any 'other breed." The two grandams- of the bull have'each' held the world's record for, long-'period' tests—Colantha 4th Johanna having held tho world's yearly record with 998.261b. butter-fat, while Fietje 22nd some years since made a. six months official record of over 1531K butter-fat. Tho dam of the bull is now in eemi-official record, and > will make a nice showing when her lactation; period is completed. "Of the heifers,. three are daughters of that'noted bull Homestead Girl de Kol's Sarcastic Lad, a sire with, perhaps moro yearly tested daughters than any other. 1 of tho'breed. The yearly record of many i of these aro exceedingly high, somo being considerably over 7001b. fat from ani mals much under mature age. It can e'er tainly be said of this bull that he has proved his dairy prepotency through his etock—tho greatest of all tests for any eiro. ......' "On the darns' side these three heifers are not without good record backing fol the whole lactation period. The grandama of two of these have produced 7241b. and 6911b. fat respectively in .one lactation period not exceeding 365 days. The dam of one heifer has produced 5711b. fat, being under unfavourable circumstances for a portion of the time. Tho dam of the third heifer will be. in eemi-official test during her ensuing lactation period, and will certainly "make good." Her sister now in semi-offici.il test had in 188 days produced 12,1781b. milk containing 4HIL/ tat. It is tho dam of these sisters that produced tiro 72-Hb. fat record. "The fourth heifer has on the dam's side a strong semi-official backing. Her grandam has to her credit 21,9521b. milk containing over 6941b. butter-fat. The dam of this heifer is now in semi-official test as a' junior four-year-old, and has in 235 days produced.over 5051b. butter-fat, and is still 'going strong.' A full sister to the grandam was also in eemi-official test at the time of my visit, and had produced in 204 days 15,2651b. milk and 5251b. £at. Ou the sire's side the grandam has no yearly record, but did for a timo hold the world's record for a week's production of butter at over .')slb. "Those who still place a good deal of importance on weekly official tests will be interested to know that tho twelve nearest dams of this heifer avernged over 271b. butter in one week."
