FRESH IDEAS WANTED.

r t, ir ' , '. c<!rtain Mont irritation which l have felt occasionally has suddenly become rampant, and'can only be slain bv expression;- so I/crave a little space in your valuable paper. Several months at?o wo had :the pleasure of holding a civic reception in .-.■ the ■■ Concert Chamber to honour Mr., and Mrs. H. B. Irving The hon. member ( for. Wellington; Central represented the' Government, and spoke. He casually, .mentioned the fact that he was bom m Wellington, and hoped the visit of Mr. and Jfi-s. H. B. Irving would leave a trail of Shakespeare societies behind. One felt rather bored by his vital statistics, and vaguely annoyed by his evidentignorahce of the fact that there is, and has been for at least seven years (possibly longer), a very excellent Shakespeare Society already existing in Wellington. As this society gives af least two public, readings each year it is safe to assume that the hon. gentleman does not support it in any way. Now recently we again had the great pleasure of honouring two great exponents of Shakespeare—Mr, and Mrs. Oscar Asche. Again the member- for Wellington Central spoke as representing the Government. Ido wonder a little by whose arrangement. In any case, why'? Again he joyfully told us he was born in Wel■lington. Now, you know—really! We are all born somewhere, and as wo have 116 say- in the matter why try to earn a cheap "eclat" by reason of a circumstance over which we have, no control, and cannot even remember? . Again the hon. gentleman expressed the same old wish about Shnkespeare societies, substituting the name of our present famous visitors. The curious thing is that the Wellington Shakespeare Society and its intellectual supporters seem to have btirae up without the. blessing and thought of this hon. poser. May I suggest, in view of future like events, and in view of the possible inability of tho Government to find a fresh representative, that the hon. member for .Wellington Central try to get a few fresh ideas? They need not necessarily be his own, but, oh, pray lot them be fresh!—l am. etc.. A MEEE CIPHER.
