DISCHARGED PRISONERS AID SOCIETY.
A meeting of the Discharged Prisoners' Aid Society was held in the Supreme Court Chambers on Thursday evening, Sir Robert Stout, Chief Justice, presiding. There were also present: Mrs. H. R. Richmond, Dr. M'Artlmr, S.M., Messrs. H. H. Ostler, J. P. O'iiogan, W. J. Kellow, E. Arnold, J.P... T. S. Lambert, J.P., and B. Cumiuiiigs (secretary). Dr. M'Arthur and Mr. E. Arnold spoke of a matter of grave importance, viz., what is to bo done with soino very old exprisoners that are really incapable of further work, and should, they thought, be placed in eonie home under strict control. A deputation from the society waited on tho Minister for Justice regarding the matter of prisoners' wives. He promisee} after the session to go into the.matter, and personally expressed liis sympathy. The following is one enss out of many, showing the good work Iho society is doing:—A man just released was found work by Mr. Arnold in the country, Mr. Wallace sending .02 for his expenses. Mrs. Hilburt aud the Rev. Mr. Dawson gave him some good clothes. Mr. Arnold sent up to the gaol for the women a lot of useful apparel. 'Sir If. Stout gave some interesting details'of the Prison Board's work. Tho prisoners highly esteem the privilege emanating from its service. During the meeting of tho board soino 1G had l>ecn released. Even prisoners have learnt to strike, for six struck, and their chagrin was groat when they learnt that only for their behaviour thoy might have been sharers of the same privilege.Mrs. Richmond is interesting herself in tho better placing of- incorrigiblo women in pome homo other than prisons. The oommitteo desire to place on record their "high approciatioi of all tho ladies and gentlemen who have so generously contributed to the funds. The report shows that for September, 1G ex-orisoners have been supplied with. 14 beds and 15 meals, three with cash, one with food, one fare paid, one with clothes, and one telegram and advertisement. The income to date was J!33 lis.; expenditure, £H 17s. lOcl.; balance, .£23 13s. 2d.
