Bidwill, of Rototawa, is sending Vocation to Riccarton to race in the Derby. Ho will bo represented at Trentham by the hard-pulling Distinction, who is to raco in the open sprint event with 11. in tho saddle. A cable message to hand announces that Robert Sievier, owner of Warlingham, wiliner of the Cesarewitch Stakes. _ has won .£30,000 over the result. This is not the first time that the ex-ponciller has been a huge winner, but since he sold that great mare, Sceptre, he has not been prominent in tho racing world. Contrary to expectations Tho Native | was not shipped to Sydney yesterday. The black gelding is now located at Levin, where he is being spelled. The Riccarton trainer, Claud Piper, was a passenger to Sydney by the Maunganui last evening. He will be present at the Melbourne Cup meeting. A'. Oliver is leaving Sydney this afternoon, and will arrive here next Wednesday. He will ride the Highden horses in their pngagoments when the weights permit, and will also have the mount on Equitas. Passengers returning from the Opaki meeting on Thursday evening vented a pronounced growl over the train arrangements. Tho special train left Opaki at 5.40 p.m. in an overcrowded state and tho journey was not completed till 0.15 a.m., the sixty odd miles taking six and a half hours to negotiate. Luckily the city tramway authorities had a couple of cars waiting to. convey the belated passengers to Newtown or other destinations. What seems to have been a most successful meeting at Caulfield will be brought to a close to-day when the Cup, of 4000 sovs., will be decided. Owing (o tho disconcerting rumours abroad concerning tho favourite, Royal -Scotch, it is probable that ho has lengthened in price during the last two days, but at latest, word comes that every effort is being made to get him to the post to- run for tho huge stake, and also for the many thousands that he has been backed for by-interested parties. We know, from past history, that he had bad feet, and a Melbourne writer some time back mentioned him as again being troubled in this way. It is extremely poor luck that he should go on the eve of the meeting. He will certainly never, again have such n royal chance of annexing a big handicap of this description, for the weight-adjusters have now seen him

in action, and such an impost as 7st. 91b. will never be his lot again. To-day tho injured member will probably b'e laced up, and an injection of cocaine administered before tho race. But will even this allow the son of Royal Artillery to hit out in his best fashion on the hard ground? Very likely it will not, and his followers will have tho mortification of seeing their thousands remaining in the coffers of tho lnyers of the odds, and, by to-night, the same people will be pondering tho difficulties that beset backers. In racing, as in every other sphere, what is one mnn's ill-Juck is another's fortune, and tho . accident to Royal Scotch may 'pavo- tho 1 way'for'Captain Whito or some of the others. ' A'victory for Lady Medallist would be pleasing to New Zealanders, as we have learned to look on tho St. Alwyno mare as our own, even though she was bred out of the Dominion, and is now owned out of it. The Yaldhurst trainer, R. O'Donnell, will not come up to tho Trentham meeting, but, to-morrow'week, his horses—Los Angolos and Oxenhope—will arrive here to race on tho second day. It was thought that, after the poor showing made by Byron in the Masterton Cup, his owner would rpconsidcr his decision to tako him to Riccarton, and in fact he did. Yesterday, however, he telegraphed to trainer Shearsby to pay up in tho New Zealand Cup, and a final decision will not be arrived at until after the Trentham fixture next week. As a result of his win in the Masterton Cup. Undecided has firmed considerably in the market for tho New Zealand Cup, and, at the present time, he is disputing favouritism with Allegory. It is reported that' ho will bs ridden by W. Young, who, at the present time, is meetinc with wonderful success in the saddle. Out of five mounts since the Riccarton meeting in August lie has ridden five winners, Altcar arid Marimba have been scratched for all engagements at the Wellington Racing Club's spring meeting. Mr. W. E. Bidwill's horses for the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting will probably go south by next Monday's steamer. Tho Ellerslie trainer G. Absolom had rather a close call on Saturdav morning (says the Auckland "Star"). He was sunerintending tho hosing down of Santa Rosa when the son of Sault lashed out and caught his tTainer in tho stomach. Fortunately he did not get tha full force of tho kick, and was able to get about again shortly afterwards. On Thursday and Friday next the Poverty Bay Turf Club's meeting takes place at Gisborne. Bobrikoff and Etfuitas are both amonp tho accentors for the Wellington Handicap, and if both go to the_ post great interest will centre in their meeting. Equitas is also engaged in tho Shorts Handicap, which event she won last year.

All things considered, the Wellington Racing Club's acceptances for tho first day's events aro very good and everything promises well for the onening of the spring meeting next Saturday. The club has succeeded in arranging for a spccial train to leave the city for the racecourse shortly after mid-day, and tho otlior snecial trains will run the same as usual up fill 1.5 p.m.
