THE COAL MINES BILL.
EXAMINATION OF ENGINEERS. Very few amendments have been made in the Coal Mines Amendment Bill bv tho Mines Committee, which reported upon the measure to the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon. The clause regarding the compulsory medical examination of engine-drivers has been modified to apply only to engine-drivers "in charge of any wiliding-engino or winding machinery by means whereof respectively persons are brought up or pissed down,'or along any shaft, pit, or inclined plane or level.'' and such engine-drivers arc to bo "sufficiently free" from heart weakness, liability to fits, and defective hearing and vision, to be in charge of winding machinery. A new sub-clause has be-en inserted, providing that the doctor making an examination may mention in the certificate that the man need not be again examined during a period to be mentioned. not exceeding three years. The committee lias struck out the suggested amendment of the principal Act, that the modification "so far as may be reasonably practicable" with regard to till* genera] mining rules should be struck out.
