CIVIC AFFAIRS.
CITY COUNCIL MEKTING. The fortnightly meeting of the Wellington City Council was held last evening, (hero being present: Tlia Mayor (Mr. D. .M'J.aren), and Councillors If. Fletcher, (I. Khirlclilfe, ,r. 10. Fitzgerald, W. U. I'. llarber, .1. (lodber, A. I!.' Atkinson, J. Trevor, l\ Cohen, U. Frost, J,. .M'Kenzie, and Dr. Cameron. II was decided that an oiler of the sum of .£1*1(1, without prejudice, be made to •Messrs. Hirst and Company for the land taken from them at Kaiwarra for .septic tank purposes. The council directed that tho construction of the verandah over the foulpath at Courlenny l'laee waiting shed, already authorised, be proceeded with as soon as possible, ' and a passage made, through llip reserve there. ' It was decided that the concession tickets issued on tho Wadeslown lino bo made transferable, in order to bring them into lino with tickets issued on the other city routes.
Notice was instructed to be given to the tenant of the council's premises at Molesworth SI reel, .at present used as a butcher's shop, that as the premises are not suitable lor such purpose, the council could' not allow the same to be used as a butcher's shop. The City Kngineer was authorised to carry mil repairs to one of tho council's premises in Kiddil'ord Street, at present used as a butcher's shop, in order to place saiuo in accordance with the butchers' shops by-law. Tho Hescrvcs Committee reported that it had been negotiating with the owner of land at Kelburne l'nradc for an access to Section 18, Town Hell, but as tho amount asked for the small strip of laud was considered exorbitant, the committee recommended the council to take the land under the Public Works Act.
Street lamps were authorised to be creeled at Oratigi ami Kaupapu ifoads. Tho Wellington City Corporation Staff Club was granted the use of the Concert Chamber for Friday evening, October 18, at the cleaning and lighting rate, viz., .£1 Is.'; the .Methodist, f)ducnlional Trust Commit Ice was granlod the use of the Town llall on DeceinbiT II (Saturday afternoon) for a fi.-tival, at .£1 I?.; tho full rental was required to be paid by the Uarly Settlers' and Historical Association for the use of the Town Jlall on September 2:1 last (.£lO IOs.K but: the association was granted a donation of .£5 ss.
On the recommendation of the Finance Committee, which hud been interviewed by a deputation, thi' council agreed to treat the Wellington Savage Club's engagement of the Concert'' Chamber, of twelve Saturday nights in ]9l:j, as a consecutive engagement, which provides for a 10 per cent, discount, subject to the provision that if the closing hour fixed by tlifi tariff, viz., 11 p.m., is exceeded on any occasion, a fee of .£1 Is. will !;c charged for each such occasion, and on no account is tho hall to bo used after midnight.
Four ratepayers were granted, loans on tho deferred-payment system', in order to carry out. drainage works, the applicants being without funds..
