MASTERTON NOTES.
(From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton, October 14. Two distinct shocus of earthquake wero felt hero at 11.22 last night. The licv. J. Dawson, secretary of . the New Zealand Alliance, met several representatives of ,the'-. No-Licenso party, hero last'week,'"and'discussed with .them tho question of a political pledge. It is understood that the local leaders of tho party aro averse to the pledge. The Hev. Mr. Dawson will, however, make another visit to tho town to discuss tiro matter. Messrs. J. Capper and H. Walton have been appointed delegates of the local branch of .the Veterans' Association ;to the, annual confereneo .of the association to. be held in-'Wellingteii this month. Masterton, October 15. Mr. T. N. Brodrick, Commissioner of Crown Lands, accompanied by the Crown. Lands ranger, paid a visit, of inspection to-day to the Toro l'oro estate, which is under offer to the Government. The Com* inissioner will subsequently inspect a property near Featherston. The Masterton Chamber of Commerce has convened a public meeting for Friday afternoon to discuss the question of establishing a woollen mill in tho district. An expert is to bo present and address tho meeting. ' The Superintendent of Workers' Homes has .visited-this district and inspected a sito near Masterton that is being ottered for subdivision. ..Tho names of workers anxious to procure homes for themselves are now being taken; " - The directors of the Masterton Cooperative Dairy Company have been invited to pay a visit of inspection to tho new- casein factory at Aramoho. A good deal of local interest is'being awakened in the proposal t6 utilise the dairying byproducts in the manufacture of casein. A number of Masterton settlers and exhibitors left to-day for tho liawke s Bay show. : . . ' Tho Masterton branch of the Political Reform League has decided to hold a "social" on. Monday evening .next, to which various members of Parliament aro being invited. '• ' _ ' Arrangements are in progress for tho opening of the cricket season. At a meeting last night it was decided to form a club from tho members of tho various hockey clubs. '• The Carlton Club holds its annual meeting to-night. Major Carmichacl, of: tho Salvation Armv, dolivers ail address to-night on tho lifo of the Mo Mrs. Booth, tho mother of tlio Army. ' - ' • , . Some of the smaller stations m tho Masterton district have installed sheepshearing machines this season. A race from Wellington by tlio Masterton Homing Club was won by : Mr. Pember's Tigerine, which' did the distance in llir. IGniin. against a' head wind.
