SCULLING CHAMPION.
BARRY DEFEATS DURNAN.
By Teloaraph—Press Association— Copyright London, October 11.
Ernest Barry, sculling champion of the world, and Eddio Durnan, the, Canadian 6cuile'r, rowed to-day for the championship of the world, the championship of Ertgland, and >£500 aside. Barry won easily. Ho had the Surrey station, and led from the start. At Barnes Bridge lie was eight lengths in front. Thence he sculled easily, and won by two lengths. Tho' time of the race was 22inin. 31sec. Contrary to anticipations (writes "Nautilitis" in the "Referee") Eddie Durnan, the Canadian, crossed to England and matched himself against Ernest Barry for the world's sculling championship. Barry had..-received challenges from Pearce, 'Arnst;. and Durnan. Harry Pearce was first "in," as he backed his declaration by n solid deposit, which was forwarded to England; then Durnan and Arnst put up deposits. Barry accepted Durnan's challenge,'with the'result that 4 Arnst took down A his deposit and returned home. Durnan, however, who is nephew of tho late Edward Hanlan, is apparently still tho best sculler in Canada, anl although ; Towns beat him hero some years a?o, ho hhs always had pretensions on the championship. He is about 10 years of age, nnd in the opinion of best judges this side has very little chance against Barry. Howover, .one never knows until the. numbers go up. . Barry, of course, was in fine condition after beating Arnst, and Durnan, too, was fairly fit before .leaving Canada. « Should Barry win, as there seems to be littlo doubt that lie will, then of course Vearce will get his match next year. '\ ARNST RETURNS. . Melbourhe, October 15. E. .Arnst, the ex-champion sculler, has arrived here. In the course of an interview,- he said ho weighed over lGst. when he reached London, on April 27 last, although he had not been idle on ship'board. He started training immediately, and got'down to lflst. 61b. nfter ten weeks' hard 'work. Within two weeks of tha race,, he found himself, after a general Triid-day meal, suffering from pains and vomiting, followed by dysentery. When lie shook this off he was weak, and lost weight. He began to improve as the day of tho race approached. A preliminary spin on that day was satisfactory, though not equal to his best. Soon after the start he found that Barry on the Thames was different from Barry on the Zambesi. He was satisfied he had met a better man, and had no exouses to offer. Ho intends settling on a sheep farm in Queensland. , ANOTHER arnst-barry race, Possible meeting in new zea- . ; ' : land.. By Telesraph—Press Association—Copyright (Rec. October 15, 10.30. plifi'.) London, October 15. The "Morning Post" states that Barry will probably give Arnst another .race in ftew Zealand waters.
