THE FISHING INDUSTRY.
A REPORT IN PREPARATION. Tho Public Petitions Committee (M to '/,) of the House of Representatives reported yesterday on the petition of A. W. Traill and 106 others, all interested in fisheries at Stewart Island and Bluff, praying for relief from "tho harassing legislation and regulations under which the fishing industry is at present curried on." The report of ; the committee was that the petition should Ikj referred to the Government for consideration. Mr. G. M. Thomson (Dunedin North) supported tho prayer of tho petitioners. Ho said that the legislation qnd regulations under which fishing was carried on was harassing always, and 110 urged tho need for amendment of it, Tho Hon. F. M. B. Fisher (Minister for Marine) said ho had boon through the reports of tho Marino Department dealing with fisheries for many years back, and ho had also asked Mr. Ayson, tho fisheries' export in the Department, to prepare a comprehensive report on tho fishing industry in New Zealand, lie had been making inquiries as to the cost of importing an expert who would help in tho establishment of the industry here. Ho (Mr. Fisher) hoped to bo able to supply to the House a report on fisheries which might bo of value to the people interested. The report was being eomniled now, hut he did not think 110 would be ablo to present it until next year.
