The fortnightly meeting of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held in the secretary's rooms, Featherston Street, yesterday. In his report tho inspector drew attention to the fact that a number of cattle had been left standing in trucks for some considerable timo without food or water at Ngahauranga. The people living near tho siding complained that they were kept awake by the perpetual moaning of the cattle, and were powerless to interfere. Tho firm who held the contract for untrucking said that they had not been notified of the arrival of the cattle, although the inspector reported that the Rtatiomiiaster had declared that tliev had been notified. The inspector himself saw some twenty of these beasts in-the yard, and pronounced them to I>9 in a very low condition, ono of theirt boiiig moro or loss a skeleton. The society decided to p.ut tho matter into the hands of their-solici-tor for further investigation. The question of over-loading horse vehicles oil hills was also discussed; and the inspector mentioned that this overloading was very bnd in the-State Coal Department yards. AVhen a carrying eontract was made there was no stipulationas to loading, and the fault lay, not with the Department, but with the contractors. For lack of evidence no steps were taken in the matter.
It was decided to write lo the City Corporation drawing attention to the reg-
istration of carrying carts. Frequently the number and name aro undecipherable on the cart, and it is difficult for tlio society's officers to find out the owner's name. As a suggestion, it was urged that all carrying-carts, both public (contractors) and private, be registered and numbered in the same way as motor-cars and cycles.
