A big public meeting was held in Peol Street on Saturday evening, under tlio auspices of the General Labourers' Union, to protest against the suspension of work on the Napier end of tho railway to Gisborne. The following resolution was carried unanimously'"That this meeting
views with alarm the suspension of work at tho Napier end of the Gisborne-Napier railway, and urges tho Government to vigorously prosecute this work until both points are connected by rail." NEW RAILWAY SOCIETY. Christchurch, October 13. A meeting of superannuated railwaymen was held this afternoon, for the purpose of forming an association. It was decided "That a society, to be called tho Superannuated Railwayman's Association, 1)0 formed." The principal objects of the association are to conserve tho interests of superannuated railwaymen in. regard to Departmental concessions, and to take action with respect to alterations in t'ho Superannuation Act. It is proposed to form branches throughout the Dominion. A HARD-UP COUNTY. Whanflarei, October 12. County Council members have signed' a joint and several guarantee to the Bank of Now Zealand for to meet payments till the rates are received. This course was necessary, as the legal overdraft was being exceeded. CHILD'S DEATH. Ekotahuna, October 12. A girl, aged eight years, named Cameron, was playing with other children amongst tho trucks in tho cattle yards at the railway station yesterday afternoon, when she suddenly cried out and asked to be taken home. She expired before medical assistance arrived. No bruises were found on tho body. The child had been in delicate health. BUSHFELLER KILLED. Marton, October 12. Information was received from Huntorville this morning that Martin Gunderson was killed at To ICapua yesterday while bushfelling on Dr. Anson's property. Further-particulars are not available. PARLIAMENTARY TRIP. Levin, October 12. The party of Parliamentarians visiting Levin arrived by tho 10.30 train and were met by the Mayor and citizens, and motored around the district, seeing the properties now under offer for closer settlement. They visited the State Experiment Farm at Wereroa and return to Wellington this afternoon. DUNEDIN BAND CONTEST. Dunedin, October 12. The Tenth Regimental Band (Oamaru) has withdrawn from the contest beginning on Monday. Tho "Star" understands that Derrv's Private Band, the 'fimaru Garrison Band, and tho Invcrcarqill Garrison Band will also bo absent. If [his is correct, tho competing baudß will number fifteen. WHANGAREI FIRE. Whannarci, October 12. A house of eight rooms, owned and occupied by Mr. Cross, was burned to the ground last night. Nothing was saved. The house was occupied at the time by four children, the mother and father being away at Northern Wairoa. The eldest child is fourteen years old. The origin of the fire is unknown. Tho insurances are not available at present.
