WALTKAUTE TO BE EEPAIRED, A BIG JOB.
Word was received from Hamburg on Wodnosda-y morning announcing that the owners of the German steamer Waltraute had decided to have the vessel repaired at Port Chalmers on tho basis of the tender submitted by Messrs. Stevenson and Cook. The amount of the successful tender has not transpired, but tho magnitude of the task may be gauged by the fact that the contract colls for. the completion of the repairs within five weeks, and the Waltraute will have to remain in dock the greater part of that time. A number of plates will have to bo removed from the hull , in order to facilitate matters and give aec«s2 to a number of buckled angles in one or two of her water ballast tanks, and it is understood that ono of the boilers will have to be shifted a little to enable repairs to be effected to several bent I frames in that section of the steamer. An immense amount of hammer ond chisel work will have to be put into tho task of removing the injured, beams and frames, whioh will havo to bo bout back to their proper shape beforo boinp asain riveted in positicu.
