"AMPHORA."

, THE NEW FASHIONABLE WARE. If the passer-by will take a glaneq in' l tho Willis Street show window of Messrs. Stewart Dawson and Co., his eyes will bo gladdened by the sight of some exquisite new chiuawaro of a class one does not see every day.. This is tho new ■ "Amphora" ware, which has become tho rago 'in London and on the Continent this year. "Amphora" ware, which is Austrian in manufacture and artistically Viennese in character, has three virtues which should mnko an imniediate appeal to all lovers of the beautiful in china— (lie virtues of form, colour, and workman-■ ship. Examine for a minute or two the drawing-room flower or fern bowls. There is ono squat and strong on its short legs, round with a dappled body of sage green, and a. glorious oclgo of roses in relief— full-sized red roses, so 'real-looking that one is tempted almost to stoop'arid inhale tho fragrance that is not there. Such a bowl hardly needs embellishment. There aro a. series of very graceful and distinctive ornaments in which the fomalo figure, charmingly draped, is used with splendid effect. One fine piece which , commands attention is just a beautiful woman, slatuesnuely poised, her swirling draperies fanned, forming tho base, of the ornament. There is high art in every fold of theso sweeping robes. The "Amphora" roses have a distinction all their own. Tho colours—delicate blues, greens, and creams—are always in tho happiest relation, and tho low relief figures which udorn them invariably have something to tell. Ono very beautiful vase, depicts harvesting, another potato-planting, and still another has n representation of the famous picture, "Tho Angelus." There is a very handsome pair of slender vases in Prussian blue, which catch tho eye at onco, and others of classic shapo and artistic colouring compel admiration. "Amphora" ware is ideal for presentation, and prices nro not out of reach. Tlicro ore nlso on exhibition in Messrs. Stewart Dawson and Co.'s window an amazingly brilliant pair of "canary" ,, diamonds, bo cjilledi on account of their ■ bright ycllowish-grcen colour. They are quite a novelty, being , the only stones of the kind in Now Zealand, and are perfectly mntohed. There aro nlso two brown, diamonds, which aro also strikingly raro among jewels. Both sets are from the South African mines.
