Mrs Zelia Nuttall, in speaking before the Hakhryt Society, described a, remarkable discovery of Inquisition documents relating to Sir Francis Drake's voyage, including the discovery of Cape Horn in the year 1578. In his voyage of 1577-80 Drake passed through the Strait of Magellan. The discovery of Cape Horn is credited to two Dutch navigators, Jacob Iβ Maire and, William Scnouten, who sighted it on January 23, 161 G. The name was derived from Hoqrn, a. town' in Holland, which was the native place of Schoutesi. Prior to this discovery it was supposed that the Strajt of Magellan was the only passage from tho Atlantic to tho Pacific, and that Tierra del Fueg'o extended down into the Antarctic ,
