NOTES AND COMMENTS. ' ; ISi Glkncoi:.J The Cesnrcwiteb Stakes will be run in England on Wednesday next.As .Our King, Bleriot and Prince Soiilt are likely.to meet in the Great Northern Guineas next month, the.race should be a very interesting one. . A final reminder is given those concerned that acceptances for the Masterton meeting and entries for the Trial Plato close at 9.30 to-night at the club's offices, Masterton. ■ Acceptances for the first day's event? at tho Wellington Racing Club's meeting close'-nn Friday next. .Thirteen of the. horses nominated for the Auckland Cup are sons or daughters of the defunct Sotilt. Tho brown gelding, Manakau, who has been-unlucky enough to run' second in threo maiden races lately, will be racing, at Ellerslie next month where, if the right-handed going does not prove to be his undoing, ho should be capable of annexing a hack race.... ' Trainer ,1. H. I'rosser has a Gold Crest | —Consuello .yearling colt that is well spoken of. i '.Tho New Zealand pony Taul is not doing as well in Sydney as was expected of I him. At Ascot on October 2 he ran .-ecI ond in the 14 hands handicap, but the performance was-not a good one, as he only bad the minimum impost and was .receiving nearly 3st. from tho top weight. ! The Dunedin - Jockey Club's spring I meeting will be. brought ; to a close at Wingat'ni to-morrow. .• ' Mr.. F. C. Thomas, of Christclnirch. a well-known sporting writer and trotting handicapper, who has been on a visit to the United States, returned to New Zealand by this week's inward Sau Francisco boat. The Victorian Amateur Turf Club's meeting will open at Caulfield to-morrow when the principal events to be decided aro the Caulfield Guineas, Caulfield Stakes, Toorak Handicap, and Debutant Stakes. It is likely that some considerable time will elapse bol'ore the last is heard of The Nativo appeal case. The judges' appointed -by Hie conference have surprised everybody by too decision delivered on Wednesday. What the appellants thought -would be the position was that the judgvs would merely decide whether or not an appeal did lie from a "question of fact" which at present is a much-discussed point. ■ The judges, however, have broken new ground.. Mr. J. Bull alleged that he was not afforded -a fair opportunity to call evidence, and the Canterbury stewards are to' havo, an opportunity , of refuting this. If, as' is reported, no minutes were taken at the original in•quiry, probably tho appeal judges willorder tho whole case to be reopened. At tho meeting of the appeal judges • last evening,'.evidence was' given by, J. Bull, C; Price,, S. Gibbons, and F. Tutchen, rider of Uranium, while Mr. J. Jackson, owner of Silver Cluse, forwarded an affidavit. When Lady Medallist' won the October Stakes at-Caulfield last Saturday, she carried Bst. 131b., while tho imported hors© Eudorus, who failed to gain a place, if-started, would be, carrying Sst. Sib. In tho Caulfield Cup next Saturday, the. respective-weights will be Ost. 31b. and 'Bst. 71b. Weights-for the A.R..C. City Handicap are due on Monday ! lfcil..''" ■'• ! '' '" '■' ■ The Australian; Jockey C'iuV.i Spring , meeting will bo concluded at Raiidwick to-morrow, when the principal event to be 'decided is the.Raiidwick Plate. The two-' mile. weigUWov-ago event is this ' year worth 1500" sovs. Trafalgar, who will be among tho starters, has won tho last three, contests for the Plate. His meeting with Duke Foote to-inorrow will arouse a great deal of interest. A Dunedin writer says that he cannot remember any prominent Australian ban-, dicapper confusing two horses of the saiuo name-to the extent of practically presenting one with a big race. In a small race, how ; evcr, this occurred in Melbourne some few years back when the New £caland-bred Chivalry- was confused with' another horse of the same name, and practically presented with a five-furlong race. Mr. G. Payne, who then owned Chivalry, allowed the horse to be rehandicapped when the error was detected. Chivalry would even then have won, but tho saddle slipped at a critical stage, and he was beaten into second place.
