A UNION AS EMPLOYER
UNUSUAL DISPUTE. " ~' Br Telecraph—Press Association—Copyrienl (Rcc. October 10, 10.10 p.m.) London, October 10. The dispute between the executive of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants and its office staff lias been considered by tho society's conference. Tho society engaged as casual clerks a number of railwaymen who had lost their positions as the result of last year's strike. These men. were paid 30s. a week by the society, but threatened to strike on tho ground that they were receiving less than tho minimum wage of 355. a week fixed by the National Union of Clerks. In consequence of this threat tho society dispensed with tho services of the men. The conference has reinstated Mr. Wiggel, a prominent staff official, who was dismissed by tho executive for sympathising with the casual clerks. It has, howover, refused to reinstate tho clerks themselves. Mr. Wilkinson, secretary of the society, complained that the Midland Railway Company had been victimising unionists, and that large numbers of- men had recently been dismissed and suspended. Tlie conference resolved that no agreement should stand in the way of defending the victimised men.
