CHECK FOE THAJIP BTEAMEKS: Ecports from Ncweastle-on-Tyne state that it is evident that the boom in shipbuilding is Eoing to last for some time yet. Close observers do not hesitate to give the present activity another two years of We. Not only is there a record amount ot work on tho stocks, but production is. in tho circumstances, almost painfully slow. The returns for the seven months of the year are short of those for the same period of last year, when they should really have boon considerably larger. But builders are terribly handicapped Ui jetting adeouate deliveries of material, while the (supply of skilled labour is short of tho demand, and naturally cannot be increased to meet tlio boom conditions which prevail. Moreover, wages are good, and the men only work full time when they ploaee. All these arc drawbacks to full production, and mea.n than the work in hand imist take time toe execute. In addition, builders who have large oiltank steamers on the stocks find that the constructional work is very heavy, and entails much time-. As so larqe a proportion of the work in the yards consists of thi'3 class of. vessel, it follows that the rate of output must be dimiushed. While tho execution of tbe work in hand is thu= slower than ordinary, builders cannot very well undertake new contracts, and these axe being pushed further into the future. Delivery is, indeed, the crucial point in making new contracts; it U a.9 important as the Question of nrice. But inouiry has not been obliterated. There is again quite an incursion of new contracts offering in the raarl'ft, high prices and deferred delivery notwithstanding, and .most of these enn onlv be accepted for completion in 1914. Then there are the' Admiralty inquiries for cruisers, which will shortly rcsjilt in orders, and will to some extent displace mercantile work. Finally, the further advance In steel plates to £8 a ton is putting uo shiphuilde'rs' quotations to figures which moke it practically out of tho question to build tramp steamers. It is r/uito .clear that, one way nnd another, tramp steamer orders will have to bo deterred for a year or two. But meanwhile tonnage continue; scarce and frcighls high. The i;et additionn to the British mercantile marine arc still very limited. The demand for new tramp tonnage, instead of being; satisfied during ,tho boom, nromlses rather to accumulate, and this will have the effect of extendfn? thi> perjod of shipbuilding activity over a longer term than was first anticipated. The. Federated Seamen's Union have p> cured' promises from Hie I'n.ion Company to make improvements in tic living quarters of certain of their vessels. Among the vessels so mentioned are the Arahura, Taviuni. and Maori. The Knnioria is putting out Newcastle coal <tt Picton.
