AMUSING INCIDENTS. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Chrisfchurch, October 8. After two weeks of strenuous effort, the Y.W.C.A. building fund campaign cuino to its oflicial closo to-night. The organisers set out with the idea of collecting J515,000, but the results fell short of ox-' ,pectations, the total sum raised being f-'iily somo ,C.i7flO, despite the most selisaerificing efforts on Mm part of soveral collecting teams of ladies mid girls, and a committee of business men. However, there still remain promises to raloem and business men to be seen, so that the work of collecting will not stoj) yet. Tho canvassers and their friends met together this evening' in the Y.M.C.A. Hall for the purposo of discussing incidents of the campaign, and as Hiss Barnes, the organising wcretnr.r, remarked, "to give an account .of our stewardship." {Somo lime was spent, in tho rein i tion of experiences, many of which were amusing.

One lady told of tho man who said ! ha would give J!5 if several others did likewise. The others who had been called on before did so, and the first man kept his promise, "linther a good idea," commented Miss Barnes. "We'll try it again." Laughter was caused by the story of the housewife, who came to her front door, and in response to all inquiries and appeals would only say: "No nothing today, thank you, nothing to-day." There was a girls team, which, when a woman came out' with a baby in her arms, generously praised the infant. A subscription wns forthcoming. "The people of Christchurch have been exceedingly generous," said a member of the Citizens' Committee. "We have been slightly disappointed, but the cam-i paign has not really needed yet." The collectors, too, had heard of remarkable objections to the association. The organising secretary capped these by telling of the old dame who protested against Iho Y.M.C.A. "because it keeps the men away from their wives." .
