(Sst. 31b.). Last year Haitfell filled third position bohind Malt King, nnd Lady Medallist. ■The victory of Pursefillor in the Juvenlie Handicap at Napier indicates that, all else being equal, u horse that has had a race has a big advantage over those not so placed. At Ha-stiugs, on Wednesday, Pursefillor was seen out iu the Stakes, but was never dangerous, while, on Saturday, she ivns ablo to show a clean pair of heels to her opponents, who were all bojinners. Considering the position, which Puraefiller filled at Hastings, i.. does not say much forttlus calibre of those behind her on Saturday. A Sydney correspondent states that (he touts at Kiindwick have been deriving amusement lately.at tho expense of Sir Lethe. There is no doubt that tho steeplechaser in question is a very plain gelding, but, when his detractors see him flying tho Randwick fences to-day they might have cause to change their present ideas regarding him. Nothing but bad luck seems to follow the-jumpers--hailing from Kararuu, and, already this year, the stablo referred to has lost tho services of Napper, Mollington, aud Fauuus. The latter w.w the making of a first-class horse, as he had a lot of pueo and only required confidence to jump well.. He was -improving in this direction .vitb every race, and, on Saturday, ho had the Hack Hurdles in safe keeping when ho fell -at the .last fence, and put his shoulder out. This continued ill-luck befalling his jumpers- will probably cause Trainer S. Waddell to think twice lreforo sending any fresh horses to "the illegitimate game." Ptiringa, who won the South Australian Derby on Saturday, would probably be ridden by tho ex-New Zealand jockey, T. O'Brien, who has been fairly successful ' since raking up his residence in Adelaide. Cn Tattersall's Guineas on' September 7 Puringa acted as runner-up to Tada'ugaj and was considered the lattcr's most dangerous opponent in tho Derby. _ The Dunedin Jockey Club's spring meeting opens at Wingatui ou Wednesday.' Lady Medallist's victory in the October Stakes at Flemington on Saturday marked her nineteenth appearance under silk in .the Commonwealth." Her performauws on the other side of the water include four wins, four seconds, and two thirds. ' Mr.. S. P. Mackay, who is reported to have purchased the New Zealand horses Royal Scotch and Ireland, is the Victorian , sportsman who won a number of good, races with Soultline a 'couple of seasons back.. . . .
