CASTLECLIFF BERTHAGE.
THIRri FEET OF WATER NOW. (By Teleerepb.-SpnoUd Correspondent.! Wanganui, October 5. The Wnngaimi Harbour Board has further cause for jubilation in tlio greatly increased depth of water at Cnstlecliff Wharf. Formerly floods in the river had but little effect upon the entrance or its vicinity so far as improved depth was concerned, but under the influence of the training walls there has been a niarked improvement aftei , each flood during the last couple- of yeors. The spring floods which took place last month had a great effect upon the berthuge at Castlecliff. which has been steadily improving for seme time. Whereas the pilot reported a depth of 24 feet last month, the depth cow is 30 feet 6 inches along a considerable length of the wharf, while- over a length of -10!) feet there is nowhere o less depth than 20 feet. The pilot also reports that the bar continues to maintain its least depth of 22 feet, while the river channel between Castlecliff and the town is also in a satisfactory state. During last month there was some very heavy weathir on the. coast, and in view of renewed criticism' of the harbour works which the Board's Empowering Bill has called forth, it is interesting to know that the gales and seas had not the least detrimental effect upon the moles at ths entrance. The engineer (Mr. HowoTth), in reporting to the Harbour Board, says that the recent weather was the most severe since the works started, and not only is there no damage to the moles, but the raising of tho latter to high water 10.-el has resulted in shutting out the heavy wave action which formely entered the estuaiy.
