THE ADVANCE OF ISLAM.

» ■ A LINE OF CHRISTIAN MISSION ■'.STATIONS. 'As a result of tho visit of Dr. Karl Kumm, I'.K.G.S., to Australia and ■ NotZealand last year, considerable interest was aroused in the rapid advance of. Islam in the British colonies in Central Africa. 'Dr.'Kumm pointed out that so serious is the menace constituted by this advance that many; of the European Administrators in Africa are actively assisting' missionary .. enterprise among the pagan'population. If the pagan races accept'the faith of Islam, the work of the civil administrators will he immeasurably increased, for the Moslems are opposed to'all political or social, advance. The Sudan United' Mission, of which Dr. Kumm is general secretary, is proposing to'.establish a line of mission stations right across the border line of Islam, from the Niger to the Nile, so that the pagan tribes may have an opportunity of accepting Christianity before they arc reached by the missionaries of Islam. A number oi' university students in Australia and New Zealand havo offered themselves for this work in Africa, and committees are now being formed in the various, towns in : New Zealand : with a view to assisting in this work. The organising Mcretary of the Australian branch of this work (Mr. D. N MacDiarmid) arrived on' Thursday in 'Wellington, mid is hopeful of forming a committee in this city similar to those already formed- in the other large centres in the. Dominion.
