SURVEYORS' INSTITUTE.
Tho council of the Institute of Surveyors met yesterday afternoon, Mr. T. Humphries presiding. Messrs. W. C. Smith, James M'Kerrow, ,1. K. Fulton, G. 11. Davis, and H. Sladden were also present. A letter was received from the Auckland Committee, suggesting that the council should move in tho direction of getting tho various universities to establish a preliminary examination for survey, which nil pupils should be required to pass before entering on their cadctshipi. The term of cadetship should be four years, and after' serving two years a cadet should bo allowed to sit for examination (practical part). At the end of his term, and, before a license is granted to him, ho should be required to pass an. examination, to lest l his experience as a surveyor and his knowledge of tho statutes relating to land survey. Tho council decided to reply to the effect that, whilo it approved of university training, it did not entertain the view that it should bo made compulsory that all cadets should pass the University. Regarding the. four years' lenn of cadetship, the council was not in a position to alter the regulations, as that would involve alterations in the statutes, and further tho Australasian Hoard, with which New Zealand is affiliated, only required a three years' term of cadetship, of which two must bo spent in the field. It would therefore hardly be politic to make the new regulations without tho concurrence and' approval of the boards. The chairman reported that the subcommittee set up at last meeting to deal with the scale of charges for Native surveys had waited upon the SurveyorGeneral, and had found that lie had tho matter in hand, and would be glad of any information which the council could bring forward to assist him.
The British Protectorate of the Solomon Islands notified that they were anxious to secure tho services of' a surveyor. The council decided to notify its members of the application.
