MAHENO'S EXPECTED AHRIYAL. . By wireless last evening the Union Company's steamer Mahcno that she was expected to arrive at Auckland from Sydney at 5.30 p.m. to-morrow. Her mails should, therefore roach Wellington by Monday afternoon's Main Trunk express. INYERIC LEAVES SAN FRANCISCO. The Weir lino steamer Inveric is reported to havo left San Francisco on Tuesday, October 1, for Wellington and Sydnev, under charter to the Union Company. The local office of the Union Company havo had np word to this effect. WIMBLEDON AT POliT CHALMERS. Under charter to Messrs. Gollin and Co. tho steamer Wimbledon arrived at Port Chalmers from Philadelphia at 8.10 a.m. yesterday. She is laden with shell case .oil, and after discharge at southern pons comes on to Wellington, where she is due about October 15. ISLAND FRUIT STEAMER.' Information received by the local office of the Union Company stated that the Island trader Navua left Suva, for Wellington, via Auckland, at 2 p.m. on Thursday. She is due here about Thursday, October 10. TRADE AT NEWCASTLE. In the September "Trade and Shipping Report," Messrs. Earp Bros, and Co.. Ltd.. in referring to the conditions at Newcastle, state that the rush of vessels for coal loading still continues, and prospects for trade are particularly bright Unfortunately for the port, the appliances for dealing with the vast amount of shipping now coming this way are altogether inadequate, and considerable delay to vessels and loss of trade have been occasioned. I Tho work of installing additional wharfage accommodation and loading berths is necessarily slow, so tliat no relief can be afforded from this source for some time. It is the intention of the Government to pass a short Bill to do away with the present Neucastlc-Carringtou bridge, and this, with the resumption of tho Thorsby Creek foreshores, will be the first step towards the reclamation of the second basin. Freight ■ rates remain practically unaltered, and a fair amount of chartering is recorded. On September 1 • there were 52 deep-sea vessels, with an estimated carrying capacity of 200.CC0 tons, in port, loading aud to load for foreign destinations. For the month ended August 31, 33 sailers and 28 steamers, with 247,010 tons of coal, were sent forward to foreign ports, as against 28 sailers and 13 steamers, with 144,487 tons for the preceding month, and 15 sailers and 19 steamers, with 133,268 tons, for tho corresponding period of last year. The export of coal to foreign ports for the month ended August 5! totalled 247,016 tons, being an increase of 1D2.529 tons, as compared with the preceding month. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. F. Davidson, third engineer on the .Maori, has gone ashore to sit for his chief's "ticket." Mr. R. Dawn, who for six years was chief steward of the Union Company's Eastern Pacific trader Talunc. has resigned to tako un business on his own account ashore. Mr. Dawn has been for over 20 years in the Union. Company's service, and his invariable courtesy to passengers has been much appreciated. Mr. 0. Flood, late chief officer of the Rosamond, hns joined the Koromiko in a similar capacity in place of Mr. J. Scott, who is to transfer to the Waihora ns chief officer for the run up to Calcutta. Next, week the four-masted barqucntinc Titania will leave Duncdin for Kaipara, to load for Sydney. It is understood that she will then probably load wheat for the United Kingdom or Continent. The Tyscr liner Indrale'mfl, which was to have left Wellington for Napier this morning, is expected to fail from tho latter port for London on Tuesday. Having completed discharge of tho Wellington pd!-!.!,t0 of her London cargo the Rnahine left for Lyttelton hi'it evening. The Home steamer Kaipara is expected to clear Wellington for southern ports on Tuesday of next week. A call will bo made at Nelson this morning, and port should bo made about 5 p.m. The Taviuni is Into in coming up the eoa,«t next week. She will not, leave Duncdin -until Mondav. Due at Wellington on Wednesday the vessel will be dispatched for Westport and Greymouth Uic same day, thus omitting the-usual call at New Plymouth. The Corinna which is dun at. Wellington from southern ports on Wednesday will be dispatched for Nelson, New Plymouth, and Onehunga tho same day. The local office of the Union Company have been advised that the collier Waihora left Newcastle for Wellington with a full load of coal at 2 a.m. yesterday. She should show up here about Thursday morning next. The Shaw-Savill steamer Pakcha is due 'at Wellington from London, via Auckland, about October 16. The Canterbury Steamship _ Company's steamer Petone is due at. Wellington with a load of Greymouth coal to-morrow. The next Tyser steamer to leave London for Wellington will be tho Muritai. She is to soil on October 10.
