NOTES AND COMMENTS.

IB* Glencoe.l

Tho Napier Park Spring meeting will take place to-day, and, with tho Hastings form to guide them, backers will no doubt, succeed in finding a good percentage of winners. Faunus, who ran third to Otatara at Hastings, now meets the Gold Reef gelding on 131b. better terms, and, as-the fences arc not very formidable at Napier, this should bring the pair together. However, although Faunus may improve a little on his Hastings form, his opponent is likely to improve more, for he is a big. green fellow, and was having his first race in public when he scored on Wednesday. The Trial Hack Handicap will see Mnnakau backed down to a very short price. ' This race is run over a five furlongs course, and, at this distance (at ■ Hastings), Manakau was galloping over everything. Fresh blood is opposed to him in the shape of Missile, who, though still a maiden performer, lias repeatedly shown that he could go very fast over a 6hort course. One thin" that will be against the Karamn gelding is that be has not had a race for some months, .while Manakau has started twice, and .will, in consequence, be more seasoned than Missile, Bollin is Jumping much better now than was his wont formerly, and, fresh from his victory at Wanganui, where he beat a much stronger field, ho is certain to touch a short price in the Taradale Hurdles. iHinemann got to tho end of seven furlongs in tho Maiden at Hastings, and, what is more, was running on at the finish. Backers will so strongly for her in the County Hnek Handicap, one mile. W. Young was asked to remain behind to ride her. and, .as ho cannot do lighter than Bst. 31b., it is only fair to assume that the mare's trainer thought that sho would receive this weight. Jn short, she would have started had sho received 71b. more. . The champion Bobrikoff has been paid up for in the big race, but not in tho six furlongs. Tho race on Wednesday should work a big improvement in him, and, should lie start, ho will be the elect of backers on the machine. Several new two-year-olds nro down to compete in the Juvenile Handicap. Marimba, who failed to leave the post at Hastings, and Multiply, who scored very comfortably there, wilt meet in the Ahuriri Hack Handicap. . The meeting will conclude with the Railway Handicap, in which Allurement has 21b. less than she carried into fourth place on Wednesday. On that occasion ho received a very bad bump fit. the halfmile post, being sent back tn last. In addition to the Napier meeting, sportsmen will have the Epsom Handicap at Randwick to engage their attention. Tho two favourites-Jolly lleggar and Cisco—each worked attractively yesterday, and will be hard to dispose of to-day. I). Dceloy is to- ride Mnlthusinn (a. member of J. Burton's team), on whom he won n race at Kosehill last, month. Other horses greatly fancied are Gigandra, who brought about the downfall.of . Ermengarde in the Tramway Handicap, nnd Barlev 'Water, who has tho nice ini- , post of 7st. Tho reported retirement of Frank Wootton from tho saddle at the end of the ■ present season in England doubtless means i' that his father is selling off all his horses and will'return to Australia. -FIXTURES. . Oct. s,—Napier Pork H.C. Spring. 1 Oct. 9 and 12—Dunodin .I.C. Spring. - October 17.—Masterton H.C. Spring. - Oct.. 2-1 nnd 35.—Poverty Bay T.O. Spring. . Oct. '2'J and 30.--flreviuoiith J.C.
