CIVIC AFFAIRS.
I MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The City Council met last night. There wero present: The Mayor (Mr. D M'Laren), Councillors J. Smith F [ Cohen, G. Frost, J. Trevor, J. Godber,' W. H. P. Barber, E. Tregear, ,I.' Fuller, J. E. Fitzgerald, G. Shirtcliffe, R, l'letcher, A. R. Atkinson, R. A. Cameron, and L. M'JCenzie. It was resolved tliat the City Solicitor should bo authorised to take all necessary steps to establish the council's claim to certain land at Orangi Kaupapa Road, which tho officers contend is a portion of tho street. The council decided to adhere to their previous decision to deny liability for damage caused to property at Hay' Street by a slip' on the Town Belt. The owner of tho property affected has renewed his claim. Tho residents of Bay View Terrace, a right-of-way off Hay Street, aro to bo informed in reply to their petition retUiesting that tho council take over and declare tho' right-of-way a public street, that compliance with their request can only be made through an Act of Parliament.
