A COUNTER PETITION. By Telegraph-Press Aesoclatlon-Copyrishi ■ Melbourne, October 2. A petition from the Colonial Mutual Life Assurance Society has been presented to the Legislative Assembly. It states that four, out of the fivo signatories to tho petition, mention- of which was. made in n/cnblo message on September 20, were formerly employed by the society. The petition' alleges that one was dismissed for misconduct, 1 und the services of the other three were dispensed with for good and sufficient reasons. It is urged that none of the allegations are ; supported by evidence other than the statements contained in the petition itself. The statements against the society, its conduct, financing, nnd management, nro denied, and are described as false and misleading. " The petitioners say they, believe that the previous petition was presented with the intention of injuring the society and damaging its interests, and was not bona fide in th6'public interest or the interests of the society. The Assembly decided to print and circulate the petition, which 'is of great length. .; ."■"■'' The debate on tho socond rending of tho Colonial Mutual Life Bill was adjourned, after a motion that the Bill be r?a' that day six months had been defeated by 26 votes to 18.
