NEXT AUSTRALIAN CARDINAL
PEOBABJA" ARCHBISHOP CAM. The question of who will be the ucxl Cardinal in Australia has again l>cen revived, When the matter was discussed after the demise of tlio late Cardinal Moran il: was anticipated that. the dignity would be conferred on Archbishop Can , , but twelve months have now elapsed, and nothing has been done in the matter. This is not surprising, however, when it is remembered thnt in England about three years intervened between (he death of Cardinal Vaughnn and tlio appointment of Archbishop Bonnie as the next wearer of the red hat. The general experience is that in those countries where Cardinals have been once appointed, such ns England, Ireland, America, and France, the death of a cardinal is soon followed by the appointment of another, and it would not be surprising if the appointment of a Cardinal for Australia was soon made. In view of the fact that it is now the summer season in Borne, it is highly improbable that any appointment will lie mado before the end of the year. There is very little doubt that, in the event of any such annointment being made. Archbishop Carr' «-nnirl be chosen for the honour.—Melbourne "Age."
