On August 17 tho Prime Minister of Canada nnd Mrs. Borden visited Clyde- j bank, where they witnessed the launch of the Union S.S. Company of New Zealand's steamer Niagara, which was named by .Jlm. Borden. The Riiests were afterwards entertained at lunch, at which Mr. Charles E. Kilts, managing director of Messrs. John Brown and Oo M the builders of the vcs-scl, presided. The chairman, iu proposing "Sueposs to tho New Ship wild Her Owners," said that the Niagara was intended for service be' tween tho three Dominious of Canada, Australia, nnd Sow-Zealand, and she formeu practically the laf-t link in the "All-Bed route."

Sir James Mills, chairman of Union Company of New Zealand, replying, eaid the. Canadian-Australian service came into tho hands of the Union Company in 1901, and they had done their best to replace the older ships by vessels of modern types. They wero told that there shortly be subsidised steamers on the Pacific, and that with' tho opening of the Panama Canal they would have railway lines competing for the trado, but he was confident that their service would hold its own. lie proposed "The Health of Mr. and Mrs. Borden," and on behalf of the builders and the owners of the new ship, presented Mrs. Borden with a' diamond pendant. Mr. Borden, responding, said that he had been particularly impressed during their voyage down the Clyde with the enormous magnitude and variety of the industries of the river. It was something of a marvel to them in Canada, where Governments assisted private enterprise a great deal, that all the development of a the Clyde had been done practically unaided and by tho foresight and courage of the men who had the ability-one might almost <?ay tho audacity—to undertake to make Glasgow what it now was. Every ono of his party would -co back to their own laud inspired with keener determination to make tlie most of Iter vast resources. He hoped that in the long years to come, not so much in the extent of territory—the territory of the British Empire was already great enough—not so much In it« resources, bceituee these wero already all that they could desire; but in the best feature of the Empire, the welfare of humanity, and the advancement of tho ncaco of the world, the Empire might still become mightier.

The Niagara is 543 ft. in lensth, 66ft. in moulded breadth. 37ft. 6ir.. in depth to the upper deck. 6Jft. in depth to the bont deck, and of 13,C00 tons errors. She will have accommodation for 281 first-class, 210 fecond-elnss, and 176 third-claE3 n/issenger*. Sho will be propelled by a combination of reciprocating engines with a Parsons lowpressure tUTbine, and mny use either coal or oil ns fuel. She will have a service fpeod -of '17 knots. Amongst other advantages the fact that a very considerable Feotion of,the ship-that portion wMe.h is devoted to the carriage of tl'fl oil—will ho both air and water ticrht. Tb« ship will be provided with 18 sct3 of Welin quadrant davits, and sufficient boats to carry, her full complement of crew and passengers.

MANUKA LEAVES SYDNEY. The Union Company havo been advised that the Manuka left Sydney for Wellingion direct at 1 p.m. on Saturday. She is due in port early to-morrow morning, and lift 9on hoard 106 salmon and 100 steerage passengers for New Zealand. , Alt AW A DUE THURSDAY. Line's chartered steamer Ando-Californian left Auckland at 5.30 p.m. yesterday. She should show up here lato to-morrow night or oarlv on Thursday morning. According to the "Press," tho Blackball Coal Company's line colliers Ngahere and Ncatoro. have been kept, fully occupied since their advent on the New Zealand coae-t, and the company has for a considerable timo past, felt the urgent need for another steamer or two to cope with their business. It is understood that the Blackball Company has ordered a new collier nt Glasgow for delivery ea.vly next v?ar. The new steamer will be considerably larger than either the Ngahere or Ngatoro,' and will have a coal-corrymj capacity of 2500 tons, a?, cotuparod with the Ngatoro, which carries about 1400 tons.
