J. Jones.—Different views are held. At one time the idea that it was the product of the natural distillation of coal or carbonaceous mattors met with support; but the weight of opinion now appears to favour tho contention that it is produced by tho decomposition of marino organisms, in souio cases animal and some vegetable.
