Dannevirke, September 28. , The dispute between the borough engineer and the council over drainage, and other matters, which has been proceeding some time, reached finality last evening. Tlie engineer (Mr. W. J. O'Dounell) submitted a report, in which he contended he was not wholly to blame. / Ho considered that he was relieved of the responsibility for defective work in the sewerage extension by the action of the council in appointing a ganger, who, he contended, had full charge of the work. The coun"cil decided to dispense with the services of the engineer, and to give him two months' salary on condition that he brought the work in hand up to date before leaving. NO SYMPATHY. Peter Thompson, sen., met with a serious accident this morning. He was engaged in building a house, when tho wind blew down a wall, which fell on him, breaking his leg and inflicting other injuries. SENT BACK. Auckland, September 28. Edward Hawkins, charged with theft of a razor from a hotel, was reported to have been four years in Vancouver .'Hospital, where he was treated for consumption. He worked bis passage to Xcw Zealand on the Jlakura, and signed off here with ten shillings, which was soon spent. The Customs officials arranged to have the man returned to Vancouver by the JFarama, and he left by that vessel last night. INQUEST.. Dunedin, September. 29. At the inquest on John Duncan M'Clnc, who was found dead on Friday night with his throat cut, a verdict of suicide while temporarily insane was returned.
