INTERESTING SNOOKER MATCH. ■ READ BEATS STEPHENSON.' •During the past few weeks J. W. Read, New Zealand's champion professional cueist h4s come to tlie front as a snooker player. Ho accounted for Tom Recce, the English professional, in 6ix games out of seven,- and on Tuesday he defeated W. E. Stephenson, late of Christclrurch, in a series of games. Stephenson, who also beat Reece, is considered by many to be the finest exponent of snooker in Australasia, but against Read he succeeded in winning only two games out of seven. Read commenced brilliantly, and ran out a very easy winner in. the first game. He also won tlie second game, the margin of points in his, favour being 11. Stephenson showed fino form in the third game, and won by a largo-margin. The fourth game was ' the.- most exciting of the series. Stephenson commenced well, and the game was called 35-love; in his favour'. Uy solid and safo play, however, Read gradually decreased the' lead, and he eventually won by two points. Stephenson ran right away from his opponent in the fifth game, but Read then put the issue beyond doubt by annexing tno next two. Considerable inforest was taken in .the match, seating accommodation at tho room being at a premium. A flashlight photo, was taken during the evening.
