Protection of Women. A meeting of the Society for the Protection of Women nuil Children ivas held on Friday afternoon,_ Mrs. W.' A, Evans (president) presiding. There -were present Mesdames A. Hoby, . G. Ponsonby, and G. Winder. Numerous cases that had been undergoing investigation were reported upon, and it was decided to give help where necessary. Dance at Island Bay. Tho Island Bay Town Hall was tho scene of a very pleasant gathering on Friday last, when the Island Bay bachelors held their annual plain and fancy dress ball. Tho hall was effectively and prettily decorated with palms, ferns, and foliage; and tho supper tablo with yellow dafiodils, Their Excellencies Lord and Lady Islington expressed regret at being unablo to bo present. The arrangements were all satisfactorily carried out by tho committco which comprised Messrs. Purvis, Collins, Bowen, Howe, Wilkening, Hindmarsh, _ Nees, and F. Glover. Mr. L. Km no being secretary. Tlio masters of ceremonies were Messrs. L. A. Howe and C. J. Lockwood, and the chaperones Mesdames J. P. Luke and M. Dawson. It was with extreme regret, writes a member of tho Y.W.C.A., that members of the Y.W.C.A. heard-of tho decision of Miss Wilson to resign, and on behalf of tho members may 1 here express our sincere sorrow at her loss, because she is esteemed very highly for her work's sake, Her influence is far-reaching, and for the 6ako of thoso who aro absent from us wo would wish through tho medium of the Woman's Column to enablo litem to join with those present to wish her Godspeed in her future work elsewhere. Mrs. Martin Williams and pupils intend giving an olecutionary recital in tho Sydney Street Schoolroom on October 3 in aid of the free kindergarten. The special attractions will be recitations by little Cecil Haiiies, Master Leonard Power, Miss Pauline, Brown, and Mrs. Williams. Shakespearean dinlogites will bo given by Mr. and Mrs. Brown, and by Mr. Ken Shornoy and Cecil Haines. Vocal contributions will be contributed by Miss Eunice Wyatt and tho Misses Sogrief. ■
On Wednesday afternoon, a "ehijia and knick-knack" "at homo" was held in the Wellington Central Mission Hall, Herbert Street. Tho room had been .comfortably furnished and decorated ' with foliage. During the afternoon, solos, recitations, and duets were contributed by Mesdamcs Howe, M'Fndycr, Tonks, and the Misses Joy Sutherland and Veda Martin, a sons in German, sung by a littlo girl, being particularly appreciated. A competition (observation and streets) provided a great deal of amusement, and was won by Miss J. Luke and Miss Redstone. Tho many pretty and useful articles which were brought by those attending tho "at home" will help' considerably towards tho providing of a stall at tho coming variety fair. Miss Hayes left Wellington last evening for Dunedin, where she will spend tho next two or tjiroo weeks with her relatives.
"The Good Old Times" is tho title of an address to bo delivered by Mr. W. J. Poynton at the Arts Club next Monday evening. Mr. P. Levi will preside, and members are permitted to bring friends. His Excellency the Governor will visit tho club on October T.

Mrs. Dall wore a graceful gown of saxe blue (rimmed with fringe and embroideries. Miss Dall was in cream crepo dc cliino nnd Mrs. Robertson in a bluo satin costume nnd large black plumed hat. Burt, Ltd., and Miss Burt are in Wellington, and intend returning to Dunedin next week. , Mrs. Evans (Nelson) and her daughter arrived in Wellington on Thursday from Napier, where they have been spending the last few weeks.
