CARTERTON, A. meeting of the General Committee of tile Carterton Bowling Club was held on .Tuesday evening, Mr. W. Dounard presiding. An iuvitntion to tile opening of tlio Mastcrton Club's greens on October 3 was accepted. It was decided to open the local green on October 10. It was announced that Mr. N. Sorensen was presenting a seat -to the club, in memory of the. late Mr. P. A. Drickson, who was an enthusiastic member of tlio club. Some discussion ensued as to having the annual pairs tournament tliij season, and it was decided to recommend tlio Match Committee to arrange lor senior and junior champion pairs contests. Hitherto members have nominated singly, and been paired on : drawing by the Match Committee. Under tlio present proposal they will enter in pairs. Hegarding' last season's unfinished lournanients, rinks and pairs, it was decided that, in the latter, tho leading pairs in- each section should bo declared winners of the section, and play off before November 21. Several new members were proposed, and will bo balloted for on opening day. The greens nnd tennis courts are in a very forward condition. Tho ordinary meeting of the Carterton Borough Council 'was held oil Tutsduj • evening, tho Mayor (Mr. F. Feist) presiding. The treasurer's statement showed the general account to bo in debit i'74li 7s. 5d., and accounts totalling .£S2G liis. 3d.'were pasrod for payment. A number of recommendations were read l'rom, the AVorks Committee, as a result, of their inspection of the, borough. Tho Domain Committee's report included tho calling ol' tenders from builders and , bricklayers for tho erection of a fence in front of Carrington Park, but the matter of acceptance was held over, for the time being. Th» building inspector reported hur.'ng granted permits to the value of X2Uo. The Gas Committee's report showed that 272,300 cubic feet of gas was registered by consumers' meters during the month, and street lamps 30,765 cubic feet. It was decided to lay a Gin. pipe down Park Koad for a distance of about one chain, to connect the new Bank of New South Wales' premises with the drainage system. Mr. Coleman. Phillips wrote, protesting against tho council's, action tilling in Richmond Itoad drain, thereby causing injury, it, is alleged, to his land. 'After discussion it was resolved that tho council regrets Mr. Phillips considers that lie has received any injury by the action of the council, and respectfully points out 'that the drain was not filled , in. but a 12in. pipe placed in it, and Mr. Phillips's out.et carenuiy joined, ot which tho council denies any liability. The Gladstono Football Club have fixed their annual ball for Friday, October 4. Visitors wero present from all over the district'at the annual ball of tho Kiwi (ladies) and Dalefield (men's) Hockey Clubs which took placc at Dalefield on Tuesday evening. The floor was ill excellent order, and tlio building was tastefully dccorated with greenery, hockey sticks, and the clubs' colours., Tho music was played by Miss Nielson (pinno) and Mr. W. Sorc-nsen (violin), extras being played by Mrs. Sorensen, Misses Dish, Archer, and Fairbrother. Messrs. C. Corlett, W. Nielson, and C. Hewson carried out the duties of M.C.'s. Tho joint secretaries were Miss Edna Gallon aud Mr. G. West.

Mr. AY. Horan, who has licen on the clerical staff at the I'rildiiig Railway Station for two years, has' been transferred to Timarti, His fellow-workers presented him with a collodion of useful and htmdsomo articles' for the tea tabic, II r. W. O'Brien, of Eltham, will take Mr. Horan's placo at Feilding. At the annual meeting of tho Feilding Bowling Club Jlr. John C'obbo was elected president and JTr. Ernest Short vicepresident. The following general committeo was clected:—Messrs. Worsfold, Suyv.ell.D. H. Guthrie, M.P., D. S. Thomson, Goodliehere, Haybittle, Stewart, Locklicad, and F. Campbell. One of tlio original ssttlers of . the Manchester block, Mr. John Jeffries, died in tho Palmerston Hospital at tho age of 7G years. Mr. Jeffries carried on a-butcher's and general store trade in Halcombe for somo years, and also had a farm. He had lately been living in Feilding. .Jlr. Jeffries leaves a grown-up family of three daughters and one son. Tho Wanganni Education Board has voted a bonus of .£25 to Jlr. Matthews for his successful work in technical education. at Apiti in addition to his fee of w£s3 as instructor at tho classes. Mr. W. Marsden, employed at Jlr. Buchanan's, Beaconsfield, recently discovered that ho was. possessed of tho/powers of water divination, and he has now made tho further discovery of power to locate metals as well as to traco a subterranean stream. Before Jlr. A. J).' Thomson, S.JI., at. the Court yesterday morning,, Bichard John Moore was charged with beinf unlawfully ou the Empire Hotel premises on Sunday. In a letter to tho Bench Jlnore pleaded guilty, and stated that he .had gone to the hotel to find a veterinarian as he had a sick horse. Sergeant Bowden gave evidence that he had found Moore in tho hotel sitting at a . table with some boarders. On being questioned Jlooro thnt !le ha(l no riclit there, bul could offer no explanation. Tho .statement that ho (Jloorc) had a sick horse at the time was untrue.
