After the wretched weather, of late it was' refreshing to havo a fino sunny flay for the opening of the Wanganui spring meeting. The course had dried up a lot, and, if the weather holds, it will be splendid going for Saturday. I ho neuls wero large throughout the. day, and the racing was brimful of interest. U. M'Sweeney, who wns riding St. l'elix m the Hack Hurdles, received a lacerated artery when his horse fell over lo Roti, but Flvnn was unhurt, The suspension of W. Youii" and T. Jones caused a little excitement, "but otherwise the day s racing wont off well. The handicappcrsMessrs. G. Morso and 'J. Chadwick-to-gether with several horsemon, camo back from the Avondalo mooting and were present at tho meeting. lhey, aro returning north for the second day s racing.. Tho Flying field attracted considerable attention in tho bird-cage, for several of tho runners wero making their urst. appearance this season. Prosper and Altcir were backed in that order, while Ecruitas, who was much above henelt, was deserted. At thtv post Pinwai anil-Nga iruv nni gave a lot of trouble, tho lattor badlj maiming Merry Frank. Tho start, howover, was a good one, Pinfrai being the first to show out. Prosper- soon took charge, but at the entrance to tho straight Piriwai. had him, and also ran up. Prosper stopped badly in the closing stages, and Merry Frank also headed him. Piriwai and Altcar fought out a good .finish, and the white-raced mare won by .a .head, The Wanganui-owned Kew and O\onhopo divided favouritism in the 3laiujn race, and the latter was unlucky to lose. Patronale gave some ,hother at tho carrier, but when it lifted l\e\v shot out,but was immediately'joined hy lopic, and the pair racod dovrn the back clear ci Chcenhope. Kew was in troubl© as they made for the straight, but Topic struggled on. Then Patronale took charge and soon had a break of two lengths. Oxenhope got out of the ruck when" well m the line for home, but his effort was too late, and Patronale won comfortably. Princess -i lo ivas fourth.* '~ ', . , ■ There itas considerable delay at Ine barrier in' tho Wanganui Guineas, and several of tho riders were fined for being 3ver-anxiou3. Tho dispatch was &C0 I cl jne, and tho starter (after being subjected to a lot of chaff) was loudly cheered for liis final effort. Haskayne was quickest into his stride, and led to the first bend, i\-hero there wns a mix-up and vocation, ras siSut took. ; lii his rearward passage ic got mixed up with Multiply, who came >nt, and Our. King, who ran in. At lha iix-furloug post Haskayne had a nsoful ead, but at the end of anothor furlong, Brown Owl had joined him. Bon Rovg .vas'in third place four lengths away : as ihoy racod round the bend, but, as the ewlers on tared tho straight, ho moved up between them. Haskayne was tho iton, and the stick came out on Brown Owl, ;idacn right Out with hands and heels, l.he Stead Bros.' representative won handily by a couple of lengths with tho remainder badly strung out. Multiply; Vocation, Our King, Winning Way,, and Oakum, Drossed tho lino in that order. After the race W. Young was called beforo the stewards, and was suspended for the rost of the meoting, for repeatedly breaking through the barrier. Oakum broke down badlj",-and will'not raco again for some considerable time. . Bollin was a great tip for the Okehu Hurdles, and ho started a warm favourite. ■ Hawick' made the pace very fast, and his rider could not -keop him back to tho field. . Bollin jumped surprisingly well, and,, at the half-mile, ho joined Coronetted in the lead. The .pajr raced round tho bend .clear of everrUnng, but. approaching the final fence, Dirby Paul singled himsolf out of the ruck, and t°ok the fence with the leaders, and just clear of Sandy Paul. A good race to tho.p"?t saw Darby Paul ont'tayin? Bollin, ancl winnm? bv three rf a length. Pandy Paul fiiiis'itd "f the fast-t'ring Co-on-etted.
