By Teleerapb—Press Association— Gonyriirbt K'" September 25. . Want of ram- is interfering with trainng on tho Kandivick tracks,, which are ■erv hard. • , WANQANUI WORK. ffij TelesriDh—Press Association.) Wanganui, Sotpemtcr 25. Heavy rain fell through the night, and :hore vero severe squalls this morning, ['ho tracks were very heavy, and fast limes were impossiblo. Bpu Revo and O.tenliope went a round, iprinting home. Winning Way and Brown Owl did a fast nile. Altcar. ran' the fastest five furlongs in Imin. osec., but was a bit rare ofterv.ards. Oakum covered .six furlongs very attractively. Bollin, Loelrwood, Vocation, Distinction, Hallard, Prosper, Our King, Multiply, md a number of others did useful work. Hawick went a round over tho hurdles, jumping well. Darby Paul and Hollier jumped three jurdles, tho former pleasing the touts. Sandy Paul did a solid two rounds. ' Mangaroa has been scratched for the Spring Handicap. NOTES AND COMMENTS. IBs Glekcoe.l The wepther at Wang.mui lias beeii rery bad during the last few davs, and the going is likel,y to be heavy for tho ipenmg of the spring meeting. Notwithstanding this, tno fields will be large, iiul up till a late hour last night Makara IFlyiug Handicap) was tho only official scratching. It is likely, however, that tho pen will be put through the names !>f a few more horses, and amonsst these doubtful runners are Labour Day and Mangaroa in tho Spring Handicap, and Btrathmoira in the Open Hurdles. This Wavorloy maro is tmikrstcod to be suffering from kidney trouble. The Guineas field numbers eight, but Winning Way may bo withdrawn in fav--sur of Brown Owl, who will be ridden by F. E. Jones. Bon Hove, with his Ashburton form to Tecommenu him, is likely to start favourite, as' it is reported that he is now a much improved horse. Our King will be ridden by L. Lambess, Vocation by F. D. Jones, Haskayno by W. Ryan, and Oakum by W. Bell. Before leaving Trentham Prosper badly defeated Bluo Lako over half a mile, and !is his opponents in tho Flying Handicap are not .i good lot tho bay son of Advance should start favourite. Equitas does not appear to bo rea'dv. Altc-a'r is sore, and Merrivonia generally shines over lonner courses. The maiden field decs not contain anything regarded as out of tho common, and this being so Oxenhope, who comes from tho powerful Stead stable, way carry the most money. Of the others Kcw showed pace at Trenthahi, and Lockwood can go fast for a few furlongs. Bollin is partial to the heavy going, and this will tell largely in his favour in tho Okchu Hurdles, whilo Fashion Plate can be depended upon to f(W a veiy short price in' the Hack Hurdles. In local circlcs the issue in the Hack Race, and Spring Handicap is regarded as very open.. The Hastings horseman, Luke Wilson, is going to tho Dunedin meeting to rido Odessa in tho Mosgiel Handicap. The St Ambrose horse and Ceylon are lo !>o sent south early next week. During-shunting operations at Palmeraton North yesterday the horse-box containing Blend and General Madoro was run off tho line, but was replaced without damage to tho horses. L. H. Hewitt, a jockey well known m this part of tho world, struck a little trouble at the Kemnton Tark (Lngland) la<l month. After flic Maiden Plato bo wo.s called upon to explain iiis riding ;Ot Burning Daylight, who started favounto at 11 to 10 on, but nn an erratic course, and miswd 'a place. After heaving Hewitt's explanation, tho stewards expressed an opinion that ho should have Icopt a straight course, and in addition to fiuina him X'lo, severely cautioned him as to his future riding. .John is entered for the. hurdle rac-c-s at Bandwick iu the nair.o of Mr. G. Bretherton. \ Nominations for tho Masterton- Racing Club's Spring meeting doss to-morrow with the club's secretary, Mr. A. Hathaway. Malt King, who won the' Spring Stakes at EosehiU last Saturday, has a wonderful record in connection with that race. In four starts ho has won twice, and been seoond twice. Sydney files to hand yesterday state that Malt King limficd per-
ceptibly after doing a gallop in cdrnpany with Eric last Thursday. One writer adds that many of the regular frequenters of Raiuhvick would not havebeen surprised if tlio chestnut had failed to put in an appearance on the following day, but ho turned up right enough, and did easy work on the gratis. Though Allegory was reported by cable to have run fourth in the Sprint; Stakes at Rosehill last Saturday, there could pot havo been much merit in Ihe performance, us tho winner was conceding tho New Zealand horse 2flb., while tho second and third horses were conceding him 2Kb. Owners are reminded that nominations for tho Wnverlcy-Wnitolnra ,I'acing Club's meeting closo to-morrow with tho club's secretary, Mr. IV. Jfacfarhme, AVaverley. F. D. Jones, F. Flynn, I!. Berry, and L. Nodder rode two winners apicco at the Otaki Maori Racing Club's meeting. Tho Avondalo Jockey Club's meeting will be concluded on next, when tho principal event to be decided is tho AvondaJo Guineas, for three-year-olds. When Mr. Jlaitlnnd hn.mlicappcd Hoyal Scotch at 7st. Olb. in tho Caulfie'.d Cup, he might with just as much reason have allotted Bronze about 7st. lib.—that is, if tho latter had been entered. This would have been a fair assessment of weight, bstween tho pair, when it. is remembered that in the C.JJ.C. Great East»r Handicap Royal Scotch won easily with Bst. 131b., while lironze, 9st. Jib., failed to gain a place. And Bronze was then at the top d/ her form, for sho had just previously won tho Egmont and AA'anganui Cups, and immediately after-sho won the Autumn flandieapatTrentham. Taking all this into consideration, TJo.val Scotch looks to bo ramarkably well treated in the Cauifield Cup. Tlio only argument that can be. urged against him is that ho may fail to stay over twelve furlongs. It is, however, seldom safo tt> assumo that a torso cannot stay simply bccauso ho has never raced much over a distance of rround. Jlorcovor, when one analyses the performances of Royal Scotch, everything points, to his being l likely to stay, for ho certainly won tlio Great Easter Handicap in good style, and also shaped well in the Hawker's Bay Guineas and Wanganni Guineas. In other races ho ivas always running on at the finish, notlbly in the City Handicap at Trentham ast January, and in the Flying Handicap and the Jackson Stakes at AVanganui in March last. FIXTURES. Sept. 2(5 and 27.—Gnraldino E.G. Spring, sept. 26 and 2S.—Wangauni J.C. Spring. ?ept. 28.—Avondals J.C. Spring )ct. 2.—Hanke's Bay J.C. Spring.
